The only Sandersen born about 1874 in Telemark is this Adolf

#5

We found him in the 1875 Census and he is with family in 1885.

1885

And his confirmation.

#13

The family seems to disappear after that as I have not found them in either the 1900 or 1910 census.

In the marriage for the parents, Ole Sandersen and Anne Marie Olsdatter one of the witnesses is a Søren Sandersen.

#3

It is likely the this Søren is the brother of Ole and also the father of Sander Ingeval Sørensen. Both are children of Sander Olsen and Ingeborg Larsdatter.

One of the children of Søren Sandersne that we seem to have missed is

Name: Ludvig Sandersen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 14 aug 1874
Baptism Date: 20 sep 1874
Baptism Place: Brevik, Telemark, Norway
Father: Søren Sandersen
Mother: Kirsten Marte Jakobsdatter
FHL Film Number: 1282544
Reference ID: Pg 52 #50

#50

No Ludvig with the family in 1885

1885

Not finding him in the 1885 Census led me to expect to find his death record.

Trying to find a person with a name that could morph into Herman Sandersen born about 1874 in or near Porsgurnn is not turning up many candidates. However there is this one. Named Hans Larss. Sand born 1874 in Eidanger (which was at one time part of Porsgrunn). He is also a seaman which is positive.

1900 Census

Born Nov 24, 1873, Named Hans Andreas, Parents are Henrik Larsson and Gunhild Marie Halvorsdtter Sandøen

Martha Johanna Elizabeth Sanderson is my great grandmother, married to Colin Mackenzie.

I have a copy of their marriage certificate if you would like it.

We heard a simular story about the jumping ship so I think we're talking about the same people.

If all goes well, the following is a list of Herman of any last name born 1873-1875 in the 1891 Norwegian census residing in Telemark (which includes Porsgrun):

I've been through the indexes of sailors in Skien and Porsgrunn and found no Herman Sandersen. There were 15 Hermans of any and every last name from Skien and 22 in Porsgrunn. Most of the ones found in the actual records from Porsgrunn were born in Solum.

Did you ever get Herman's death certificate?
