My grandmother Signe Espeland was forced to leave Norway and her illegitimate baby daughter around 1906/07 and travelled to Canada (NewWesminister, BC). Signe's family in Norway was to raise the baby and I think they were in the Sande, Vestfold County area. Strommen? Anyone with any info would be great. Can't find record of Signe's voyage , proabably travelled under a different last name, maybe Anderesen or Magnesen. |

Nice find on the arrival Kċre. Here is the transcription from Ancestry.com. Looking at the original manifest the first names are very faint but I can read the first name of the first person on the list as Signe. She is travelling to New Westminster B.C. She is listed as 18 years old.
Espeland in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 Name: Espeland Gender: Female Age: 18 Birth Year: abt 1894 Date of Arrival: 3 Sep 1912 Vessel: Lake Champlain Search Ship Database: Search for the Lake Champlain in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec, Canada Port of Departure: Liverpool, England |

1885 Census
1891 Census
Could be same Margit Espeland, traveling to Canada in 1906
A lot of research on the family was done here
And the family was discussed here on Norway Heritage
Find a Grave memorial, Martin Christopher Espeland, and Alfred Espeland, at New Westminster, BC
A Wordpress bio of Hans Espeland b 1862 and wife Olga - seemingly the family Signe traveled with in 1912
Hans Andersen Espeland and wife Olga getting married here
So the Olga with whom Signe travels in 1912 seems to be her father's brother's wife Olga.
The family discussed here on DIS-Norge
An "Adele Espeland" is mentioned on the link above as married to Olai, son of Kristen Hansen and Marta Espeland (Marta is a sister of Signe's father).
1910 census, on Drydal in Sande, the son Olai Kristensen born 1897, together with parents and siblings. Father is Kristian Hansen Drydal and children might also be found as Hansen or DrydalLink
Again, the family of Olai Dyrdal, in 1900: Link ft=1900&knr=0713&kenr=008&bnr=0084 |

Nice finds everyone! So the "Adele Espeland" discussed in the DIS-Norge forum (on link) is the same person as Adele Larsen, daughter of Signe Espeland. DIS-Norge
And Adele Larsen 1911-1991 married Olai (Kristensen or Hansen) Dyrdal (1897-1980). Place of residence given by the burial website is Gyltesĝ.
The DIS-Norge discussion says Olai's sister Olga married Julius Abrahamsen in Canada. If descendants of a sibling to Olai can be found, that could lead to Adele's offspring.
Manitoba, Marriage Index, 1879-1931 Julius Abrahamsen married Olga Hansen Dyrdal Marriage Date: 7 Apr 1916 Marriage Place: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
1916 Canada Census Grayson, Saltcoats, Saskatchewan Julias Abrahamson 29 born about 1887 Norway, to Canada 1909 Olga Abrahamson 23 b abt 1893 Norway, to Canada 1916 Bjorn Abrahamson 1 daughter, born in Norway Haler Clouse 25 single, b Norway
1921 Canada Census Grayson Municipality, Saltcoats, Saskatchewan Johne Abrahamson 34 b abt 1887 Norway, to Canada 1908 Olga Margaret Abrahamson 26 b abt 1895 Norway, to Canada 1915 Borgenley Margaret Abrahamson 6 daughter born in Norway Edna Abrahamson 4 b Saskatchewan Mildred Abrahamson 3 b Saskatchewan Irene Abrahamson 2 b Saskatchewan Lillian Abrahamson 1 b Saskatchewan
This might be the death of same Julius - and note he is at New Westminster.
Name: Julius Abrahamson Gender: Male Birth Year: abt 1888 Death Age: 87 Death Date: 24 Mar 1975 Death Location: New Westminster Registration Number: 1975-09-005797 BCA Number: B13341 GSU Number: 2050441
This Kari Dyrdal is probably or may be a sister to Olai Dyrdal: Link
So Olga and Kari would be sisters-in-law to Adele, and their children would be first cousins to hers. |
