According to the Census of 1895, my great grandfather Ole Andersen Segtnan from Norway (misspelled Ole Sagton) lived together with the family of Whitman Bosworth Plaisted (5/25/1864 - 9/25/1938) as a farmhand. Is there any way to get a more specific location? Like an address? I am familiar with these maps of Wilkin County from 1903, but the Plaisted Family seems to have moved quite often, and lived another place already in 1900: http://www.historicmapworks.com/Atlas/US/28000/Wilkin+County+1903/ Does anyone know this family? Whitman was married second time with a woman from Norway called Gertrude Gordan. According to Geni.com, she was born 4/16/1875 - 10/30/1971. Any information describing the living/ daily life of this family would be of interest. I have tried to contact what I believe could be descendants of Whitman B. Plaisted, with no result so far. |

Interesting problem. Here copied and pasted the information on Whitman Plaisted's homestead proved up in Wilkin County in 1894. Presumably it's likely they still lived there in 1895.
MN2060__.309 Patentee PLAISTED, WHITMAN 2/14/1894 8303 MN 5th PM 132N - 046W SW¼ 28 Wilkin
If you go to glorecords.blm.gov you can input Whitman Plaisted's name and use the mapping feature to show you the location of his homestead. |

Great link Jackie! Can you give more details on how to use the "mapping feature"? I can't find it... |

Jwiborg: what seems to work for me: after you have done a search on name, go to patent details. Hook the Map-box under Land Descriptions, and the image zooms. Eventually, in my case there was to few details to find specific location. Isn't that correct, JKMarler? |

Is there a reason why every property (I have seen so far) seems to be 160 or 80 acres? Were these standards? |

Yes, this was regulated by the Preemption Acts of 1841 and 1853, and the Homestead Acts. Each settler was entitled to buy 80 or 160 Acres of Land. In 1880, the price for government land was $1¼ - $2½ per Acre, ie. 160 Acres costed between 200-400 Dollars. |

There are a lot of records on Gerturde G Plaisted. Mostly Census records. This is the earliest I could find. The age must be 25 not 5. She did die in 1971 according to the records. There are four Family Trees on Ancestry.com for her, but none of them have any parents listed.

Thanks a lot Anton. I have interpreted Gordan, Gertude's last name, as an americanized version of a Norwegian last name. Eventually, I have not been able to catch it. Anyone? |

In 1920 they are living in Minneapolis. One of their sons was born in 1910 so he can be found in the Minnesota Birth Index. This is likely where the name of Gordon comes from for Gertrude. Record is from Ancestry.com
Bosworth Plaisted in the Web: Minnesota, Birth Index, 1900-1934 Name: Bosworth Plaisted Birth Date: 24 Oct 1910 Birth Place: Wilkin, Minnesota, USA Father's Surname: Plaisted Mother's Maiden Name: Gordon Certificate Number: 1910-31368 URL: http://people.mnhs.org/bci/Res...
Same mothers maiden name on his older brother.
Name: Whitman Plaisted Birth Date: 23 Feb 1902 Birth Place: Wilkin, Minnesota, USA Father's Surname: Plaisted Mother's Maiden Name: Gordon Certificate Number: 1902-29362 |

Here is some info about the public land survey method used to measure public lands to transfer to private owners in US from about 1790s to today.
http://nationalmap.gov/small_scale/a_plss.html
640 (English acres) acres = a section A section is a square roughly 1 mile on each side. A township is a series of 36 sections
So in the case of Whitman Plaisted, the map showed which section (640 acres) his land was in but the verbal description will tell you which quarter section (which 160 or 80 acres were his). This means you can see where his land was down to a half mile or so. Its unlikely that any subsequent owner who lived on the farm would have torn down the buildings so once you have located Plaisted's piece the plat map from 1903 might show where the house or other out buildings were on the property.
Understanding the Homestead Act of 1862 is important for Norwegians or Americans of Norwegian ancestry as land was a huge motivator for Norwegian migration to US. The chance to own your own land was of critical importance. |

I've checked a dusin detailed documents now, and still don't see any " Map-box" under Land Description to check. Can anyone give a working example? |

Gordon was a name adapted quite often by Norwegian Americans from any farm in Norway which carried Gård in it or was Gården. |

Try searching for Whitman Plaisted in Minnesota.. When his info appears the Accession Number is in blue and clickable. Click it and it opens another page with more detail. On that page, scroll down to the map and click on the box underneath the word Map. |
