Hello,
Could someone please help me with the dates of my great grandmother's death and burial record. Please see https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/7060/183, entry 6 for Kristi Larsdatter who died in Bauge, Skanevik, Hordaland, Norway. I think it says she died 27 Feb 1826, but the two other dates of 4/3 -17/4 confuse me. Could someone please clarify what the meaning of 4/3 is and 17/4 in this type of record?

Thanks so much!
Colleen

For me your link didn't work. I looked up Skanevik 1826 deaths but #6 on the female page concerns a woman named Siri Torgersdatter.

The multiple dates in funeral records include a date of death then a date of burial and then a date of funeral service. Sometimes the burial is the same date as the funeral service. It appears that on this page there are only two dates:

Source information: Hordaland county, Skånevik, Parish register (official) nr. A 3 (1815-1828), Death and burial records 1826, page 109.

I think Colleen is looking for the death of Kristi Larsdatter born 1826, died 1876, according to an online tree.

Tree

1875

Death 27 February 1876

See #6

I think the burial would be the 04 March date (burial should be five days after death) and funeral mass followed, on the April date.

Hmm well she could have a typo in her request but here is the page of 1876 deaths and her ancestor is not number 6:

Source information: Hordaland county, Skånevik, Parish register (official) nr. A 6 (1869-1878), Death and burial records 1876, page 206.

She asked for help on "entry 6 for Kristi Larsdatter who died in Bauge, Skanevik, Hordaland, Norway."
Since the farm Bauge is in the Holmedal parish the correct link is:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7060&idx_id=7060&uid=ny&idx_side=-183

Her link did not and does not work... Which required extra search by forumites. Her ultimate question about the meaning of the dates was answered twice in response 1 and response 2 despite her lack of clarity. All in a day's work here....

To the specific dates you are asking for:
24 Feb 1876: Date of death
04 Mar 1876: Date of burial
17 Apr 1876: Date of funeral service
1826: The year she was born.

4/3 = March 4th, 17/4 = April 17th.
The reason for 2 different dates for burial and funeral service are unknown, but most likely was it because the Priest was busy with a church service in a nearby church on the same day. The Priest could have a big district to cover, and thus he couldn't be present in every little church at any time. And funerals couldn't wait too long after the person was deseased. So the actual burial was performed without the Priest present. At the next opportunity in the church, he performed the funeral liturgy for the deseased that only Priests could do; For you are dust, and to dust you shall return...

I was wondering why such a long gap in time between burial and funeral. Helpful, thanks!. Note to Colleen, if the tree I posted is yours, applause for including sources! Well done indeed.
