Hi Borge, I spoke to you a few months ago. I have found what I think is my hubby's gt grandfather's immigration info on the EllisIsland site. I have his name as Conrad Ole Hansen born 11-1895 in or around Bergen area of Norway. I show a male immigrant in 1917 arriving 12-25-1917 in USA on the ship Bergensfjord and departing in the port Kristiania, Akershus, Norway. I have a 1920 census showing him with his wife and infant daughter in the 1920 Iowa census. I am not sure how long he lived in NewYork area before moving to Iowa. I was told by his son in law(my hubbys grandfather) that he jumped ship in NY so he could bypass the EllisIsland process. I think he was a crewman and that is why he could blend in and do this. I show his ssc# and death info as having him born in NY but he was not. He was 100% Norweigen immigrant. How can I find out more info on him since I don't have his farm name in Norway, etc., or his family names? I can only track him to 1920 Iowa census as a primary source so far? I hope someone has advise that won't cost me a fortune to docs.

Hei, My great grandfather is born north of Bergen 1893 on a farm called Keilen in Lindaas, his name was Konrad Hansen. He was a fisherman and married with my great grandmother(Olava Kristofferdotter) at Karmøy in Rogaland approx1912, and they lived in a small house together with Olava's parents/familiy on a place called Sevig (Sævik). Konrad didn't make much money as a fisherman and decided to try the luck in the States. He travelled 14feb 1914 via Stavanger to Liverpool in UK, from there to Ellis Island and arrived there 24 feb 1914, his final destination was Iowa. I've been told that he sent letters and money back home to get his wife over, but she was afraid to go. Konrad then travelled back to Norway to bring his family over, but Olava never go with Konrad to the states. At last Konrad gave up and went back to the states maybe in 1917 and my family at Karmoy never heard anything more from him. It would have been interesting to check out whether this is the same Konrad. I've tried to send a e-mail to Lisa via this site but the adress didn't work anymore, so if anyone can help me to come in contact with Lisa I will be thankful.

The 1920 US census shows a Conrad O. Hanson living in Hardin County, Iowa. He is listed as 26 yrs old, born in Norway, immigrated to the states in 1913, has not filed papers to start the naturalization process (if he'd been back to Norway between 1913/1914 and 1920 he probably wouldn't be yet eligible to start that process). Conrad is a farmer in Ellis township of Hardin County and he is married to an Iowa born woman by the name of Edna (21 yrs old). They have 1 child, a daughter 1 and 1/2 yr old, named Eleanor. Also in their household is living a brother-in-law (Edna's brother), named William Lizer, 15 yrs old and born Iowa.
Hardin County is in central Iowa and is one of the counties included in the very interesting website - Norwegian Heritage in Story County and Central Iowa - http://genloc.com/NorStory/ Someone there may have access to additional information to help in the identification of this Conrad Hanson - they have a guestbook and a method to ask queries.
The 1925 Iowa state census asked each person to list the names and birthplaces of both their parents - if you could find someone to check that census - you might be able to verify IF this is the same man.
I wish I could find Lisa in CA (idsmom33) for you. I'll keep trying several ideas and post any success here for you.

Lisa Dobson Gilmore also posted queries on the RootsWeb message boards until about 2003. The Hanson/Lizer family seems to be her husband's ancestors. She had been fairly actively seeking information about the surnames Cain, Sizemore, Berry, Brooks, Evans, Gilmore and Dubell. In one message posted Nov 2002 she listed two alternate addresses for herself - legilmore@yahoo.com or legilmore@charter.net

Thanks, for the e-mail adresses. I've e-mailed both adresses without E-mail Failure Delivery Report so I just hope Lisa is still reading the e-mails.
I've also got confirmed from "Statsarkivet" in Bergen today that the birthday of my Gr Grandfather was 29 Nov 1893, same as Lisa has given. So there is a good chance that this is the same Konrad. I hope someone that knows Konrads family in the States reads this and make contact. I've have a scanned photo of Konrad when he was married to Olava Marie here in Norway, that I could e-mail to help checking if it is the correct person.
Thanks Gunnar |
