I just got my great uncle Thor Baarstad's naturalization papers. They state he left Liverpool England on June llth, 1892. These papers also state that he entered the U.S. through Detroit on June 20th. Thor's family bible says that he "came to this country on the 22nd of June and that he arrived in Fargo on 30 June. The papers also state that he traveled on a ship of the Allan Line. His name doesn't appear at the Ellis Island site even though I've tried many variations,so I'm thinking he must have come in through Quebec. Looking at ship arrivals at this site the Circassian which may have arrived as early as June 21st, might be his ship. Where could I look for this manifest?

The Circassian departed from Liverpool on June 16th. Do you have any other details about Thor, like his age place of birth and travel companions?

Sorry I'm so late getting back to you. Yes I do have more information regarding Thor.

Thor was one of a set of twins born to Peder Baarstad and Ingeborg Johannesdatter on Jan 5th, 1861 in Vaga, Gulbrans Valley, Norway. Thor was a painter by trade, as was his younger brother, my Grandfather, Peter Baarstad. According to the naturalization papers I just received, Thor left Liverpool England on the 11th of June on a ship of the Allan Line. I have searched the Ellis Island site but no Thor appears. Thor's papers state that he entered America through Detroit on the 20th of June. The family bible states that Thor: "Came to this country on June 22nd, 1892 and arrived at Valley City on June 30th. After getting established in America Thor sent for his fiance; she departed Norway in July of 1893 and arrived in Fargo, ND 20 days later on the 28th of July. That's all I know about either of them.

Will he be in the Ellis Island records if he entered through Detroit? Have you tried to search for Thor Pedersen?

Hi Roger, If he came through Detroit he probably did arrive in Canada. Here is a site for Canadian Passenger lists http://www.archives.ca/02/02020204_e.html
You can probably get the films through the LDS Family History Center if there is one near you.

Here is a link to Thor's record leaving Norwayv - found at the Digitalarkivet It shows Thor P. Boostad leaving Oslo (Kristiania) destined for Montreal on June 3rd 1892. He was not traveling alone as he seams to have a family and was companied by several others from his home place.

Borg: I don't know how you folks do it! That was absolutely amazing! When all the known facts are folded into the material you found, such as the home, time of departure, name, it has to be Thor. Now there is a new mystery, the family members he was traveling with are not his wife or children, because he wasn't married until 1894. These could be uncles, cousins, etc. New clues for me to unravel. With this information I should be able to pinpoint the ship that he left on. If I find that, then perhaps I can find the manifest, or is what you found the manifest? But if so the manifest for what ship?

I have ordered a film roll from the canadian archives for all ships arriving in quebec during the time Thor's ship arrived. Thank you so much for your help. If you have any other suggestions I am all ears. Roger

The record with Thor is from the Emigration registers of the Oslo (Kristiania) police. The "E" after Kari Boostad's name indicates that she was a widow.

I hope you will find them on the Canadian record, check the S/S Circassian! Did you find your Peder Pedersen Bårstad in the police records? This could be him in the police register departing Oslo in 1903

Hi Roger I don't know if you are familiar with the Ditigalarkivet site (the link is listed below) but it has lots of information. Here is a link to Thor & family on the 1865 census Census
(I finally figured out how to post the link so it doesn't show the whole thing and create that huge window )

I found these ships,
Parisian leaving Liverpool on 6-9-1892 going to Londonderry Ireland leaving there 6-10-1892, then arriving in Montreal Quebec on 6-18-1892.
Dominion leaving Liverpool on 6-10-1892 then arriving in Montreal Quebec on 6-21-1892. These are all on microfilm C-4538
I hope this helps some. Jim
