I am looking after Berthe Paulsdatter Avlund (Born Helleberg, married 1 Berge, married 2 Avlund). Berthe was my great great grandmother. Berthe was born in 1811, and she emigrated to America from Gausdal, Norway in 1879. Berthe, her husband Ole Avlund born 1812, and their son Christian, born 1852, arrived to New York with the steamship Baltic, June 6th in 1879. (Ancestry.com). In the passangerlist at Baltic , Berthe's name was written Birtha Aflund. After this I am not sure how their life went, except of that Berthe probably died the same year (1879). I have seen names that might look like this family in a book from Mt Morris Holden Lutheran Church in Wautoma, Wisconsin, the last name was then maybe changed from Avlund/Aflund to Olsen, but there might be somebody else with the same names? Two of Berthe and Oles sons; Hans, born 1841, and Torger, born 1850, had emigrated earlier. Dose anybody know something about this family and descendens? I would be so happy to receive some more information! Regards, Mari Sylte Ringstad, Brøttum, Norway

To start...

Here is a way to search for Norwegians in the 1880 US census in Wisconsin.
link

Candidate family in 1880, below. Torger could = Thomas. The father is listed as "Hans Olson." But remember, an American census taker thinks the father of Christian Olson should be Olson. So "Hans Olson" may be just an American style mistake - for Ole Hanson.

1880
Mount Morris, Waushara, Wisconsin
Christian Olson 28
Ellen Olson, wife 24
Hans Olson, father 67
Thomas Olson, brother 29
link

EMIGRATION
Departing Oslo 23 May 1879
Headed to Berlin, Wisconsin:
Berthe Hansen Aflund age 66
Ole Hansen Afund 67
Christian Olsen Aflund 27
link

The town of Berlin, Wisconsin is mostly in Green Lake county, Wisconsin, and a little bit in Waushara county (per Wikipedia)

Find-a-Grave
Christ Olson
born 04 July 1852
died 02 December 1940
burial: Mount Morris Holden Lutheran Cemetery
link

BIRTH
Christian Olsen
04 July 1852
Gausdal, Oppland, Norway
Parents: Ole Hansen and Berthe Paulsdatter

In the same cemetery - Mount Morris Holden Lutheran - is Hans Olson born 17 February 1844.
link

The son of Ole Hansen and Berthe Paulsdatter - Hans Olsen - was born 19 February 1841, according to this transcription:
link

So, it's not conclusive, that this is the same Hans Olsen, and needs more work.

A lot of similar names, farmnames and location. Are these folks related?

In 1903; Regine Paulsen Stetterud (16) and Kristian Simensen Aflund (21) from Gausdal emigrates to Minnesota. Destination for Regine is uncle T.G. Berge, Kerkhoven, Min. For Kristian it's Friend T.G. Berge, Kerkhoven, Min.
Torger G Berge in Kerkhoven, Minnesota.

Regine's parents: Andreas Paulsen & Berte Olsdatter, Stetterud
I believe Kristian's parents are Simen Hansen Aflund & Oline Bergitte Iversdr. In 1910, he has returned from Minot, ND to his brother in Gausdal.

I think you are correct Jan Peter. A tree on Ancestry.com lists both Christian Hansen Avlund born Dec 24, 1881 and Christine Simensdatter Avlund born May 22, 1880 as having parents Simen Hansen Avlund and Oline Bergitte Iversdatter Leikvam.

However I do not see a conneccton between this family and the
Berthe Paulsdtr. Avlund (Berthe Olsen) 1811-1879 that the original poster was looking for.

At least in tis tree

The connection I had in mind were the names Torger, Paulsdatter, Aflund and Berge from Gausdal, in the original post.

My reference shows Paulsen and Aflund, both from Gausdal, going to uncle Torger Berge in Kerkhoven, MN. A lot of similar names, but I see no immediate familyrelation either. But it could be family, and if so; maybe Berthe's family can be found near Kerkhoven or Minot.

I stand corrected Jan Peter, Berte Paulsdatter Helleberg born 1811 Gausdal Norway was married to Torger Guttormsen born 1807 Follebu, Guasdal, Norway. according to a separate tree.

They had a son

Guttorm Torgersen Berge
1829–1887
BIRTH 25 OCT 1829 • Follebu, Oppland, Norway
DEATH 29 JAN 1887 • Gausdal, Oppland, Norway

And he had a son

Torger Guttormsen Berge
1856–1917
BIRTH JUN 1856 • Follebu, Oppland, Norway
DEATH 14 AUG 1917 • Swift, Minnesota, United States

Who must be the same person as your

Torger Berge in Kerkhoven, MN

Thank you - this is all very useful!

Yes, my great great grandmother Berthe Paulsdatter was married 1. to Torger Guttormsen Berge, born in 1807. They got to children, Guttorm, born 1829, and Paul, born 1831. Paul was my great grandfather. Torger died when my great-grandfather Paul Torgersen, was about one year old. Berthe remarried 2 Ole H. Avlund in 1836.

Looks like Ole and Simen are brothers:
Ole Hansen Aflund born 30 Apr 1812
Simen Hansen Aflund born 22 Mar 1825

Thus; Kristian that emigrated in 1903 is a 1st cousin to Berthe's sons Hans, Torger and Christian.

There is a family tree on Ancestry.com for Hans Olson and Andria (Nancy) perhaps Seversen or Sebjornsen ? Their children married and had many children of their own. Charles had at least six children.

BIRTH 19 MAR 1881 • Mount Morris, Waushara, Wisconsin, United States
