Greetings, I was wondering if anyone on this site may have advice that will help me locate my Great-Grandfather Ole Johnsen Stenfield.
Background: At the turn of the 20th century, Ole emigrated from Norway to the US where he became a reindeer herder in Alaska. Although he reportedly worked closely with the Saami, who trained the Eskimo how to herd reindeer, my Great-Grandmother (his former wife, now deceased) was emphatic about the fact that he was not Lapplander or Saami, but Norwegian. Apparently Ole worked closely with and emigrated the same year as my Great-Great-Grandfather Albert Bernhardt from Germany.
Immigration Year: 1898 Likely City of Origin: Trondheim, Norway Birth Year: Between 1874-1879 Death Year: Around 1938 Wife: Sara Rita Burnhardt Stenfield Reimer b.1909 d.1997 (1/2 Inupiaq, Eskimo 1/2 German) Daughter: Rita Stenfield Turner Ferris b.1931 d.2008 Possible Residences: Unalakleet, Alaska; Teller, Alaska; St. Michael, Alaska; Nome, Alaska
I have researched the caravan that traveled from Bessekop, Norway to New York on the SS Manitobian's final route in 1898. My thoughts are that he may have traveled with that caravan. However, my father thinks he may have traveled through Canada. Any clues or information you can provide would be very much appreciated.
Thank you, Rachel

A possible candidate for his father is John Johnsen Stenfjeld found in the 1900 Norwegian Census. His occupation translates as reindeer owner. He is found in Namsos a municipality in Nord-Trøndelag.

And possibly the father in the 1865 Norwegian Census. He is living at Steenfjeld. Which is a possibiltiy for the origin of the name.

Based on the evidence presented by Einar (see below) it would appear that the father is Jonas Torkildsen. Thus the John Johnsen shown above in the Norwegian Census data can not be the father of Ole. So I will strike the data. |

Ole Johnsen Stenfield is said to be born May 3 1874 at Bjarnor (Bjørnør) his parents being John Johnsen and Anna S Nielsen.
Ole Jonas Torkildsen was confirmated Aug 10 1890, see #11. There it is noted that he was baptized at Osen mountain church July 6 1873 and that his parents was Jonas Thorkeldsen and Anna Sofie Nilsdatter.
The baptismal record is #78.
A bygdebok for Bjørnørfolket says that Jonas spoke swedish and that Anna Sofie was born in Sweden. The couple had 8 children, Ole was the next oldest. Jonas had 70 reindeers. Norwegian text see here. |

Eibache: Do the records you have given, indicate whether Ole Johnsen Stenfield and his family had Laplander or Saami heritage? Is it possible to know if the bygdebok for Bjørnørfolket has been translated into English? How is it possible that Ole Johnsen Stenfield and Ole Jonas Torkildsen is the same person? And, why might he have two different names? Thank you so much for your help. |

Einar mentioned that Jonas and Anna Sofie had eight children. Here are some of them Parents seemed to have married in 1870.
See number 4, Name is what? Suuianna? born in 1875
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070328660287
See number 22, Name is Anders Johan born in 1876
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070328660326
Anders can be found in the 1900 Norwegian Census along with his mother Anna Sofie. Jonas Torkildsen the father and husband must be deceased as Anna Sofie is listed as e i.e. enke or widow. They are now living in Nord-Trøndelag. How they are related to Jonas Johansen is not clear.
You will notice that Anders Johan is given the last name of Johnsen, same last name that his brother your Ole used. The sons of Jonas Thorkildsen would have used the patronymic name of the father i.e. Joanassen which can also be spelled Johnsen. They all seem to be involved in the reindeer business except for Anders Johan who is listed as a hired hand.

Jonas is called a Fin or Lap in church records, censuses and in Bjørnørboka. Here is what I have translated from that book: Jonas Torkilsen (1819) - 1895 1870 married to Anna Sofie Nilsdatter 1842 - The census says Jonas was born in Grong. Nils Taraldsen visited him in 1882 and wrote that Jonas speaks Swedish, and he is Swedish by birth. In any case, he has certainly been a long time in Sweden. He came to the mountains in Osen just before 1873, but his first child is not registered baptized in Osen. Anna Sofie Nilsdatter was born in Sweden, she is 23 years younger than her husband. Whether Jonas had been married previously is unknown. In 1875, the family lives in Andelslia. Besides two children they have the shepherd boy Lars Mortensen, b. 1860 in Grong. It is stated that Jonas had 70 reindeer. In 1891 Jonas and Anna Sofie were living at Fjøsvandet. It is noted that he is nomadic lap, born in Overhalla, partly supported. They were living in a gamme. 5 of the children are referred to in 1891: Ole Jonas, Anders, Kristine Magdalene, Marie Charlotte and Elen Marie. Jonas died 20.01.1895 in Norddalen. Children 1. Nils b. 1871 (says Osen in census, but he is not baptized there) 2. Ole Jonas b. 1873, baptized in Osen. In 1891 census living at Almenningen 3. Sunnianna b. 1875, d. The same year, barely 10 months old. 4. Anders Johan b. 1876 Twin. In 1891 Anders is on Brandsøya. In 1900 he was in "Finnehuset", Flatanger 5. Elen Marie b. 1876 Twin, d 1877 over 2 months old 6. Kristine Magdalene b. 1880 Twin. She was in Melhus when she was confirmated 1897. It is then stated that she was born in Osfjellet 7. Marie Charlotte f 1880 Twin 8. Elen Marie b. 1885
