My great grandfather emigrates to America in 1902 https://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/gen/vis/8/pe00000001060906 as a bricklayer. He is traveling to his uncle in Wisconsin. I have som information on his uncle´s family and whereabouts.
He returns to Norway in 1905. But claim to be sailing at sea for some of the years he has been abroad. I know he lost his one arm in America, but have noe record of the incident. Is there any way to search for crew on american ships for the period of 1902-1905? |

Yes Ancestry.com has a large number of lists of both crew and passengers. They are sometimes intermixed. If he really made it to Wisconsin, there are not many ships sailing from Wisconsin, except those that travelled the Great Lakes. There is a data base
Michigan Passenger and Crew Lists, 1903-1965
I have searched this data base but not found anyone with a name close to Otto Anders. Drengsrud on that list. I have also searched the general immigration lists and found his probable arrival in1902 with his sister Kaisa. He states that he is going to his Uncle in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Not a usual place for sailors
Otto Drongsried in the U.S., Border Crossings from Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 Name: Otto Drongsried Birth Date: abt 1877 Age: 25 Gender: Male Arrival Date: 27 May 1902 Port of Arrival: Quebec, Canada Ship Name: Ionian Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Residence Place: Biscreus Record Type: Manifests Line Number: 29
From a Gent.com tree, maybe yours?
Sammen med Otto reiser Kaisa Andersen, 19 år. Otto er brickl ayer. De skal til en onkel H. Christiansen i Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Found back in Norway in Ministerialbok for Rjukan prestegjeld 1912-1917 (0826Q1)

Kaisa Andora Drengsrud who traveled with him was most likely his 6 years younger sister, dest Bennet, Wisc.. Both tickets prepaid by uncle H. Christiansen in Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Did the sister stay in US or did she return to Norway, too?
What did Otto's entry in the 1910 Norwegian census say about his stay in US?
So Otto was imprisoned in Norway after his return. What was he convicted of?
It would be hard to be a mason with only one arm.... |

In the Eau Claire, Wisconsin newspaper there is a list of unclaimed letters dated 12 May 1905 and Otto Drengsrud is on the list. |

This newspaper story published in the Eau Claire Weekly Telegram on 28 June 1904 may be about Otto Drengsrud only called Otto Rude. That is of course, if his half-sister was also known as Mrs. Andrew Haldum.
This Otto Rude apparently was pushed off or fell off a train and his arm was cut off by the moving wheels of the car as he landed.
The sister lives at 313 Gray street in Eau Claire. The accident happened at Menominee Junction. Otto Rude is characterized as an Eau Claire man, aged about 25 years lately employed as a moulder at Phoenix manufacturing.
The Eau Claire Leader on 24 June 1904 says the sister is named Hellum. It was speculated that when Otto Rude recovered enough from the loss of blood that the rest of the arm would likely have to be amputated at the shoulder. It was his right arm.
Here is Andrew Haldum family in 1905 in Eau Claire. Did Otto Drengsrud have another sister in US?

Holy Cannoli! Her maiden name was something like Drengsrud! https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRJC-VQ2 |

You guys are just awesome!!! I did know about his sister. I am so sorry for not posting that before. I am quite new to this. And sometimes I forgot to post all the link I have. Yes, Otto had a sister, she is the correct Andrea Anderson/Drengrud/Haldum.
Is there any way to get this unclaimed letters?
There is no information on Ottos stay in U.S in the norwegian census. The only thing I found is what is mentioned in his court protocol. He was imprisoned for stealing and god sentenced to 1 year in prison.
He claims that he returns to Norway early in 1905, but there is no records of this as I have found yet.

Likely the letters were destroyed after a certain length of time of after they were advertised.
Originally, the train amputated his right arm above the elbow. One of the articles reflected that there were two stories how he came to be injured, both involved him "jumping" on the train, one in which he missed his footing and then fell and the other was that he had gotten on the train (which is a non-paid way to ride and illegal) but a brakeman had pushed him off and then the accident happened.
So this sister Mrs. Haldum was named Oline (on her headstone it's Olive) and lived in Eau Claire from at least 1890. |

Otto Drengsrud´s sister is named Andrea, and is married to James Sevals.
And yes. He also had a sister named Oline that lived in Eau Claire. So he went to visit his uncle, but seem to end up at his sister.

Oline also had a son Alfred killed in a railroad accident in 1920 link
Geni tree link
Some photos of Phoenix Manufacturing in Eau Claire link
When Otto leaves Norway in 1902 he says he is going to Eau Claire. When he suffers his accident in 1904 he is said to be from Eau Claire and "lately employed" at Phoenix Manufacturing in Eau Claire.
After losing an arm, Otto would perhaps maybe not be able to get a job as crewman on a ship.
Eau Claire is not a port city and it is not near a port. I guess it's possible Otto left Eau Claire before the accident, went to sea, and then returned to Eau Claire - but that seems unlikely.
Is it possible the family story about him working on a ship is mistaken?

It is very possible that his statement about been working on a ship is mistaken. He claimed so when being arrested in Norway. But there are no records pointing towards that. From what I have learned from this post. It is very much possible that he lied about this to the Norwegian Court.
Is there any way to search for his record when leaving U.S?

Not really, no US records of passengers are required before a ship leaves but only when a ship lands in US. But it's possible that he returned to Norway by going to UK first then on a feeder back to Norway and there are few records of incoming and outgoing in UK available in Ancestry. |

I have searched the Ancestry.com data base "UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960" with no luck. Searching Otto born 1877 plus/minus 2 and serving 1903 plus/minus 2 finds no one whose last name starts with D. If he used the name Andersen or Anderson there are four candidates. However there is very little information given for each person so I find it impossible to determine if any of the four are viable candidates. Usually just the information found on this record and most times an occupation. Which I have added.

Since the newspaper article had his name as Otto Rude perhaps he travelled under that name as well. |
