He also in Verdal in North-Trøndelag. He was baptized October 21, 1855. His parents were Andreas Sevaldsen and Ingeborg Rasmusdatter. When his confirmation took Place October 1, 1871, it seems as if his birth not was August 13, but 19....... And both ministerbooks "tell" that he emigrated to America May 31, 1879. Can you find him for me?

Sevald Andreasen, born August 13,1855

You should find the historybook "Verdal historielags skrifter. 1993 Vol. 20 : årbok", which contain 14 pages about this man and family, including letters he wrote.
Sevald married in Chicago, and have a son Edwin born 1884. Sevald and Edvin went to Verdal in 1891, and Edvin who stayed there, died in the Verdal landslide in 1893. Pictures of family, including Edvin and Sevalds 2nd wife Guro in the book.

I am quite clear this is the person I have asked about - because one of the places they live in Verdal, is Hagen (the garden!). I don't wander at all that he is called/calls himself Hagen. This is absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much!

Sevald returned to Chicago in October 1891.
He had to leave little Edvin Herman behind, and he wrote in a letter to his sister in Sweden, that it was a tough decision. But he didn't see any other option. It would be too difficult, since the winter was coming.

In 1893, he was waiting for his son to come over to America, together with Sevalds sister Ragnhild. The trip was arranged, but time went by without them showing up. And in the newspaper on May 22nd he reads about the big landslide that had happened in Verdal, and got worried. He wrote a letter home the same day:

"Dear parents and little Herman.
I have now waited for a letter from you for 2 months, and received nothing, so I'm getting really worried how you are back home. In the newspaper I read about the big landslide that have done enormous damage, but I can't tell where it has occured. I hope you're not affected, but it's terrible in any case. Please write back so I know how you are doing, and if you need any help.
On the 8th of May I sent 200 kroner to Dad. I hope you have received it now. (...)"

Sevald also telegraphed the Magistrate in Levanger, to check if his family was among those affected.
A few days later he received a reply from the Magistrate, that said his Father, his Mother, his Sister and his little son Herman all were among the deceased from the landslide.

Photo from Verdal after the landslide of May 19th 1893. A total of 116 people were killed. 105 farms destroyed, and thousands of animals killed.

Thank you very much for all the information you have given me after I wrote thank you yesterday evening. Just above this photo of the horrible landslide in Verdal in 1893, you have written that Sevald wrote to his sister in Sweden. Do you know where she lived?
And you have written about this that a Helga Hagen lived from 1840 to 1980. Is it really 1940+

Sevalds sister Ingeborg Anna went to Järpen, Jämtland for work, where she married widower Per Allmin, who was 29 years older than her.
He had two daughters from first marriage, and now got two sons with Ingeborg Anna: Olof Alfred born 1893 and Per born 1899. Family after these two live in Sweden today.

In a letter to Ingeborg Anna in April 1906, Sevald and Guro live in Chicago, and have four daughters:
Inga Margrethe. Becoming 12 this Autumn. Doing good at school. Best in class for her age. Born 22 Nov 1894.
Helga Anita. Becoming 10 this Autumn. Also doing good at school. Born 05 Sep 1896.
Esther Elisabeth. Becoming 4 in May. Helping mother to look after the youngest. Born May 1902.
Florence Gudrun. Born 10 Jul 1905.

This woman is a great grandchild of Sevalds sister Ingeborg Anna. Olof Alfred is her maternal grandfather.

No she was born in 1896, so she lived from 1896 to 1989. You are misreading the Record. The Title of the Record is from 1840 to 1980 but the that Record only gives the birth date. See below.

Name: Helga A. Hagen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 5 Sep 1896
Birth Place: Fillmore, Minnesota

And died in 1989

BORN: 5 Sep 1896
Died: 19 Jul 1989

Following Jan Peters information on the family, here is the child Florence with the family in the 1910 Census. I do not see Esther Elizabeth so she may have died young. The name of the father is listed as Oswald but is probably a misspelling of Sevald.

Florence G Hagen
in the 1910 United States Federal Census
Name: Florence G Hagen
Age in 1910: 4
Birth Year: abt 1906
Birthplace: Illinois
Home in 1910: Chicago Ward 28, Cook, Illinois
Street: Cortland Street
Race: White
Gender: Female
Relation to Head of House: Daughter
Marital Status: Single
Father's name: Oswald Hagen
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's name: Gura Hagen
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Oswald Hagen 54
Gura Hagen 45
Inga M Hagen 15
Helga A Hagen 13
Florence G Hagen 4

Florence also died young at age 14. Again a misspelling of the fathers name should be Sevald not Levand.

Florence Hagen
in the Cook County, Illinois, Deaths Index, 1878-1922

Birth Date: 10 Jul 1905
Birth Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois

Death Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Burial Date: 3 Jan 1920

Death Age: 14
Occupation: School Girl
Race: White
Marital Status: Single
Gender: Female
Residence: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Father Name: Levand Hagen
Father Birth Place: Norway
Mother Name: Gina Haugse
Mother Birth Place: Norway
