Thanks Obru. So Olav and Gunhild NEVER saw Ole in the US. He disappeared almost immediately (very soon) after his ship docked.
To clarify the post regarding Ole Helland, it means the Ole Helland jkmarler found is NOT your grandfather. Often when the right person is not found, the forum posts "candidates" who maybe could be him. Then the forum researches the candidate to show if it is or is not the right person. For that reason, you may continue to see postings of Oles who are not your grandfather.
If a drowned man was found by the ship the day after docking, one would think he could be identified as Ole, if it was Ole. Then one would think Olav Bakken or his wife would be notified by the police (or, less likely, the ship company). I don't know the procedure - those are just my thoughts on what should happen. I suppose there could be a problem with the address for Ole's contacts (for example, if Olav Bakken could not be found). |

A body found in the sea, even in the big city of New York, would likely have been covered in a newspaper.
I have looked for "Ole Olsen", "Ole Olson" or "Ole M. Olsen / Olson" but not found any mention in the old fulton history site which has many New York newspapers. (Likewise, nothing on Olaf Bakken, either) But perhaps a more general search for "body found" might locate, you never know. You would be welcome to look yourself as well.

Here is, if all goes well, a link to the death index for all New York boroughs:

JaneC : I know Olav met Ole. If Gunnhild met him, I am not sure of. Ole Helland is NOT my grandfather. Maybe I've heard of Ole Helland, not sure, but we can forget him. Ole Mathias Olsen is my grandfather and it is him I am looking for. Olav Bakken is the one he should meet. The drowning story is a rumor, I dont know if I belive 100% of it, but there was a question back here. That makes the whole story so diffecult. It has been a big question for my Family, that is why I started this Journey. Maybe it will stay unsolved, I dont know ..
jkmarier : I think you are right about the drowning story. I will look into the links.
A thought comes up, The Family several times talked about it.. Did he just started a new life in USA.? I know some do. Thanks for your help and time |

Well, you may have to consider the possibility if he wanted to get away that he might change his name, too, to escape detection. |

Yes I've thought of that too. His real name is where I have to start. One never know, but for my self, I had to give it a try. Again I thank you all.

jkmarler Could I ask you one question ?
Earlier you said : On the ellis island page for Ole Mathias Olsen it also says he had been in America in 1906. Is it possible to give me a copy of it? From Ellis Island records ?
Thanks |

I don't think copying a browser link works any longer at ellis island.
You would have to join and login at the ellisisland.org page. That can be done free of charge. Then you can use ellisisland's search engine for the name and click to see the manifest. Although the site will try to get you to buy a hardcopy of the image, that is not necessary to view the pages. ( I think there were two pages for Ole's entry--if I remember correctly) I just went there again and yes Ole's entry covers two pages. Interestingly, he anticipated that he would be staying in US for 6 years--at least that's how he answered the question.
Otherwise you could search through the link at familysearch.org to the database. Then login when prompted. The Ellis Island login also offers a possible sign in with facebook but I am unfamiliar with that procedure. |
