Stef, how did you come up with John's birth date and parents? Did you take them from a (sourced or unsourced) online family tree? Or did you find them somewhere else?
How about the name "Leonard"?
A candidate I found fits some but not all of your "facts." We need to know how certain those facts are. |

Great. According to the tree, Ole Anderson emigrated with his wife and at least two sons, after February 1853 and before December 1862. |

Apparently John L and his brother Henry J married sisters - according to the tree. Do you have census info for Henry J? |

I notice this box from the tree you posted
"Hjalmar Johann Olesson alias Henry John Olson. Norwegian fishing families came to Pointe-St-Pierre in 1854. A report in 1859, stated that 25 Norwegian families, had settled in County Gaspe. The Norwegian settlers began to make their way to Minnesota by 1862"
There is only one Hjalmar Oles* born abt 1853 plus/minus 2 that pops up in the Ancestry.com data base for Norwegian Baptism. Father is not Ole Andressen as the tree indicates.
Hjalmar Olesen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Hjalmar Olesen Gender: Male Birth Date: 7 jul 1853 Baptism Date: 31 jul 1853 Baptism Place: Gamle Aker Menighet, Oslo, Akershus, Norway Father: Ole Ellingsen Mother: Anne Kathrine Jensdr FHL Film Number: 255734 Reference ID: 2:Q55ZDN

Reports in Norwegian newspapers tells that Gaspe was first settled by Norwegians in 1861. The Brig Brødrene under Capt. Koen left Trondheim on May 25 1861, arriving Gaspe July 14. The Bark Iris under Capt. Gloppestad left Stavanger May 4th 1861, arriving Gaspe - Quebec July 10th. No ships listed for 1862.
Since Ole Andersson is recorded dead in Gaspe in March 1863, it is likely the family left on one of these two ships. Thus; I would guess these folks are from Rogaland, Hordaland or Sogn & Fjordane in case they left on the bark Iris, or from Trøndelag in case they went on the brig Brødrene. |

According to the tree, John's wife Emma (and the Tope family) is not Swedish, so the birth place in public records can't be a confusion with her. |

Regarding his brother Henry John Olsson, b. 03 Mar 1853.
Here is one Johan Henrik Olesen born 03 Mar 1854, with father Ole Andersen. Illegitimate child, see #27.
The churchbook says Ole Andersen is Bachelor and "Gudbrandsdøl", ie. he is from Gudbrandsdalen valley in Oppland. |

The tree indicates that he died in Gaspe, Quebec but this record indicates he died in Ontario. The original record shows the wife to be Nancy Tope so I am assuming that this is the same Henry. All of the records I have seen show that the wife uses the name Nancy.
Henry Olsson in the Ontario, Canada, Deaths, 1869-1938, 1943-1944, and Deaths Overseas, 1939-1947 Name: Henry Olsson Gender: Male Age: 84 Birth Date: abt 1853 Birth Place: Sweden Death Date: 20 May 1937 Death Place: Algoma, Ontario, Canada Father: Olever Olsson
In the 1881 Census Henry and family are living next to the family of his wife. That would be William Tope and wife Louisa.
1881
And Henry and family
Henry |
