I have been trying to find any mention of Ole, Birget and Knud Knudsen on any USA/Minnesota from 1900, 1910,1920,1930 census. They emigrated to USA from Norway on the State of Alabama ship from Norway 05-16-1879 arriving in New York on 06-10-1879. Ole was 28, Birget 21 and Knud was <1. I haven't found any record but I am not that good at finding information! Just wondering if anyone else can find them on any census! |

Another general question I have is is it common for names to have been changed as in Knud to Knut. Knudsen to Knudson or Knutsen or to Knutson after coming to America? |

Names didn't necessarily 'change'. There were just variations of spelling and sometimes variations in pronounciation. I still get mail with various spellings of my family's Norwegian surname - that doesn't change what I consider my name or what my birth certificate says. You have to consider what type of record or document you are finding the variant on and WHO wrote it that way. Today many think there has to be a court action to change a name, but that isn't necessarily so. Useage alone is often enough so long as there isn't any intended fraud or criminal intent.
So YES, you can find various spellings used for Knud/Knut/Knudt and the patronymic forms. |

If they were part of the Numedal group weren't they all headed to Minnesota? So you might want to try the 1885, 1895 and 1905 Minnesota state census schedules, too. |

In Family Search I put in many combinations of Knudsen, also Birget I found several Ole's but not married to Birget and no son named Knud that was the right age. I tried 1885, 1895, 1905 and USA 1900 census. No luck :-(( Maybe they didn't stay in Minnesota. So many mysteries! |

Probably your couple getting married #6: SAKO, Nore kirkebøker, F/Fc/L0003: Parish register (official) no. III 3, 1878-1884, p. 62 Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060607150226
And the child Knut # 4, male half page: SAKO, Nore kirkebøker, F/Fc/L0003: Parish register (official) no. III 3, 1878-1884, p. 5 Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060607150182
Mom and baby leaving the parish in 1879 # 3 & #4 (same page as the Gaute and Birgit Knuds. combo earlier): SAKO, Nore kirkebøker, F/Fc/L0003: Parish register (official) no. III 3, 1878-1884, p. 99 Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060607150245
From these records are a couple of farm names that might also be searchable: Vikaneiet and Førnebø Interesting that Birgit's patronymic is Ols rather than Knuts, so she cannot be your Birgit anyway.
How about this family? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQF6-KVW
