Looking for information for my sister's mother-in-law, Alfhild Caspersen Hansen born
on September 10, 1888 in Kristiana, Norway. We are not sure when she emigrated to the United States.

A little more information might help the search.

Was her maiden name Caspersen (Caspersdatter in Norway) and then married a Connelly who died in 1936 and then she married a Hansen??

This would seem to be a record for her.

Alfhild Hansen
in the U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014
Name: Alfhild Hansen
SSN: 056-52-0493
Last Residence:
11787 Smithtown, Suffolk, New York, USA
BORN: 10 Sep 1888
Died: Aug 1977
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1973)

Is this the same person?

Alfhild Caspersen
in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Marriage Index, 1885-1951
Name: Alfhild Caspersen
Gender: Female
Spouse: Charles J Connelly
Spouse Gender: Male
Marriage Place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Marriage Year: 1923
Marriage License Number: 486534
Digital GSU Number: 4141644

There are some issues with your post having to do with the name or names used by Alfhild and also with her birth year. I know you listed that she was born September 10, 1888, but I wonder if that is correct.

Other information that is found also leads to a Alfhild Kapsersen who arrived in 1914. But her birth year is listed as 1896. Her father is listed as Alfred Kaspersen and she is from Kristiania.

Alfhild Kaspersen
in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Alfhild Kaspersen
Arrival Date: 24 Aug 1914
Birth Date: abt 1896
Birth Location: Nrw
Birth Location Other: Kristiania, Norway
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Scandinavian
Port of Departure: Kristiania, Norway
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Kristianiafjord

Visit #3

Based on other records I would think this person is the woman who was married to Charles Joseph Connelly and who lived at least for a time in Philadelphia.

Alfhild Caspersen
in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Marriage Index, 1885-1951
Name: Alfhild Caspersen
Gender: Female
Spouse: Charles J Connelly
Spouse Gender: Male
Marriage Place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Marriage Year: 1923
Marriage License Number: 486534
Digital GSU Number: 4141644

Also a very valuable record is this one:

Mrs Alfhild Connelly
in the Selected U.S. Naturalization Records - Original Documents, 1790-1974
Name: Mrs Alfhild Connelly
State: Pennsylvania
Court Type: District Court
Court Location: Eastern District, Pennsylvania
Naturalization Record Type: Petition for Naturalization
Naturalization Record Number: 85589

The original copy of the record gives a lot of detail including birth date of Feb 2, 1896 Christiana and arrival of in New York of August 24, 1914 on the Kristianfjord

Looks like Charles Connelly died in 1936 and Alfhild then married an Peter Hansen?

The 1940 US Census indicates a birth year of 1898 which fits better with the Alfhild found in Norway

1940

This Alfhild is likely this person.

Alfhild Kaspersen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Alfhild Kaspersen
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 3 mai 1896 (3 May 1896)
Baptism Place: Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Father: Alfred Kaspersen
Mother: Alma Birgitte Kristiane Hansen
FHL Film Number: 1282517
Reference ID: item 3 bk 7 p198

Original record at Digitalarkivet

#80

And can be found in the Norwegian Census

1900

If this is not the correct person let me know and I will delete the information.

A little more evidence that your Alfhild was born in 1896 and not in 1888.

Alfhild Caspersen Hansen
in the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
Name: Alfhild Caspersen Hansen
[Alfhild Caspersen Caspersen]
Gender: Female
Race: White
Birth Date: 2 Feb 1896
Birth Place: Oslo, Norway
Father: Alfred Caspersen
Mother: Alma K Hansen
Type of Claim: Original SSN.
Notes: Oct 1958: Name listed as ALFHILD CASPERSEN HANSEN

Also compare the above 1940 US Census to this 1930 US Census seems to be the same Alfhild, and also born in 1896.

1930

Alfred Kaspersen married Alma Kristiane Birgitte Hansen October 26, 1895. His father was Sven Anton Kaspersen and her father was Teodor Hansen.

Alfred Kaspersen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Alfred Kaspersen
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 26 okt 1895 (26 Oct 1895)
Marriage Place: Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Father: Sven Anton Kaspersen
Spouse: Alma Kristiane Birgitte Hansen
FHL Film Number: 1282518
Reference ID: bk 1 p233

#69

His mother is likely Bolette Gustava Kaspersen Olsen also spelled Olette.

Sven Anton Caspersen and Olette Gustava Olsdatter were married November 22, 1868.

Sven Anton Caspersen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Sven Anton Caspersen
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Birth Date: 1841
Marriage Date: 22 nov 1868
Marriage Place: Gamle Aker Menighet, Oslo, Akershus, Norway
Father: Casper Caspersen
Spouse: Olette Gustava Olsen
FHL Film Number: 255737

His father is listed as Casper Caspersen (however that may be an error) and her father is Olaus Olsen

#82

Based on the marriage record this is likely Sven and Olete and young son Alfred in the 1875 Norwegian Census.

1875

However the link to Sven in the 1865 Norwegian Census lists him in the family with father Casper Jensen so perhaps the marriage record has an error for the fathers last name. He is listed as having been born in Drøbak, Akershus in the wedding record so that matches the 1865 Census.

1865

Baptism record for Svend Anton Caspersen

#7

Casper Jensen married Chrisinte Johannesdatter June 12, 1836 in Drøbak, Akershus.

#11

Capser Jensen was born March 3, 1811. His father was Jens Hansen and his mother was Anne Carlsdatter

#25

Wife of Alfred Casperson was Alma Kristiane Birgitte Hansen.

This is likely the baptism record for her

Alma Kristiane Bergitte Hansen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Alma Kristiane Bergitte Hansen
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 15 aug 1875
Baptism Place: Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Father: Theodor Hansen
Mother: Anne Marie Kristiansen
FHL Film Number: 1282643

Very complicated history for your Alfhild. Perhaps she was also married to a Strand and in 1920 lived in New York with a daughter named Maria. Maria is listed in the 1930 Census with the last name of Connelly but also listed as having been born in New York. But also in New Jersey to also add some confusion.

1920

Maria Strand Frazer
in the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
Name: Maria Strand Frazer
[Maria S Frazer]
[Maria Strand Strand]
SSN: 124425179
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 1 Sep 1919
Birth Place: Jersey City, New Jersey
Death Date: 16 Sep 1998
Father: Conrad Strand
Mother: Alfhild Caspersen
Type of Claim: Original SSN.
Notes: Nov 1966: Name listed as MARIA STRAND FRAZER; 03 Nov 1998: Name listed as MARIA S FRAZER

Husband and father Conrad H Strand can be found in the 1940 US Census where he is listed as divorced.

Konrad Strand was a sailor who arrived in New York in 1916 probably from Bergen and found in the 1900 Norwegian Census.

There is an alternative candidate for the parent of Alfhild. There is a Karsten Alfred born in Akershus in 1868 that has been put forth on a Geni.com tree for the father of Alfhild Kaspersne and her siblings.

Karsten Alfred son of Ole Christian Caspersen and Petrine Naaes. #36

Link

However this does not match the father listed in the marriage record shown above as #69.

Worth a further look however.

The family with son named Karsten in the 1875 Norwegian Census.

1875
