This is my 2nd great grandmother's marriage record in Osseo Wisconsin. Her name was Martha or Mathia Peterson and she was born in 1842 in Norway. I am trying to read what her father's last name could be-(2nd name to bottom of the page) but the handwriting is poor and the writer is using a lot of soundex and butchering the names. For instance 4th name to the bottom is supposed to be Orm Gullaugson and Ester Olson is supposed to be Astrl Eigildson. Peter's last name doesn't look like anything that I have heard before. Anyone care to take a stab at this one?

I am assuming that since you are trying to determine the name of Martha or Mathia Peterson's father that you have not found her baptism record. Is that correct.
The reason for looking at the husband is that sometime the couple know one another is that they come from the same area of Norway. It would appear that Halvor's parents are this couple.
Halvor Ormsen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Halvor Ormsen Gender: Male Birth Date: 5 jul 1827 Baptism Date: 8 jul 1827 Baptism Place: Treungen, Telemark, Norway Father: Orm Gullougsen Mother: Astri Egilsdr FHL Film Number: 126963 Reference ID: 2:10V71J5
and they were married
Orm Gullougsen in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926 Name: Orm Gullougsen Gender: Male Marriage Date: 25 okt 1807 (25 Oct 1807) Marriage Place: , Kviteseid, Telemark, Norway Spouse: Astri Egildsdr FHL Film Number: 126954 |

That's right. I haven't found anything on her except for the marriage record and the 1880 census in Hale, Trempealeau county Wisconsin when she was married. Her daughter's marriage record also lists her as Mathia Petersen. |

In a previous thread, Oluf C Hagen married Anne Ormson. This is Anne's father Halvor in 1900, with birthday listed as May: link
Anne's 1895 marriage record lists her mother as Mathia Pederson. link

Yes that is true Jane that he says May but he also reports his birth year differently in every census I have found him in. I really think there is a language or speech barrier at play. |

I believe they are the same individual- others may dispute. He immigrated in 1862 with his brother Toruf. Then he is in the 1870 census in Ridgeway, Iowa, Wisconsin as a single man. I believe he then marries Martha/Mathia in 1873 and they live in Hale, Trempealeau co. I show them next in the 1875 Wisconsin census, then the US census in 1880 both in Hale. Martha then disappears from record. Halvor is in the 1895, 1900, 1905 censuses with his daughter(s). Nothing after that- no death record found and he may be buried in Dane. Anne moves to North Dakota by 1910 and her sister moves with her to Minnesota after that. The sister Lena's death certificate lists her father's name as Halvor Ormson Tweit* I can't tell if there is another letter after the T on the record. That's all I have. Thanks for helping! |

Orm and Ormsson are very rare names in Norway, but an ordinary name especially in the Viking- and Middle age, Norse "Ormr", and means Snake/Seerpent and is referring to the Midgard Serpent in Norse mythology .

JKMarler: Those are very exciting leads. I am at work but will look closer at the links this evening. I have checked into Christian before but only found the census records and not the marriage record listing his father's name. You are all amazing- thanks Jane as well. |

Too excited, I came back at lunch break. JK- so far all those leads look promising....and you let me find her birth record- how nice. She was born Apr. 20th 1841. Her mother's name was Anne Marie Christoffersdr. I thought that was quite telling because my great grandmother(her daughter?) was also named Anne Marie. The Matea in 1910 could be different person- the birth year is 10 years off so I won't lose hope. I'll have to see if I can track down Tomas in the USA next to see if he can lend any more clues.
Jane: Your links were helpful as well. Did you notice how Christopher's age is reported badly in all of those censuses? |
