I'm assisting a relative in Norway in locating his father Ole Paul Arnesen Haugen. Ole was born on April 9, 1906 and emigrated to Quebec Quebec Canada on the Duchess of York arriving on May 9, 1930. He was 24 years old. His passenger papers state he was going to work on a farm for a Mr. R.C. Bosworth, CPR in Winnipeg Manitoba (data from Library and Archives of Canada Microfilm Reel # T-14763, vol 3, page 142, item 370162.) I'm unable to locate records from the Canadian Pacific Railroad Immigration Program and Ole Haugen does not show up in the databases after his arrival in 1930. Would welcome some suggestions as where to search. The only hit I received that may match his knowns is a burial in Ponoka Red Deer Census Division, Alberta Canada for Ole P Haugen born in the correct year because the headstone states he was 58 years old when passing on February 20,1965 (find a grave listing for Forest Home Cemetery). I seem to have hit a dead end. Any suggestions? |

There is a Rhey C Bosworth living in St Paul and traveling to Winnipeg, Manitoba. The destination for this trip is his employer C.P.R. Col. Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rhey and his wife are living in St Paul at this time. Date of the record may be 1930.
Rhey C Bosworth in the Border Crossings: From U.S. to Canada, 1908-193
Rhey and his family are living in St Paul in 1930 US Census.
1930
Based on several Family Trees, he was born in Iowa and lived there in 1900 Census. Was single and an engineer and living in Spokane, Washington in the 1910 US Census.
In 1920 he is married still living in Spokane and listed as a farmer.
In 1940 he is living in St Paul, Minnesota and is listed as Superintendent Of Colonization for a Steam Railroad.
I found no evidence that he lived in Canada.
In his WWI Draft Registration he was living in Spokane and lists himself as District Representative for Canadian Pacific Railroad.
In his WWII Draft Registration he is living in St Paul an is working for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. |

You might want to try Our roots website. Contains searchable province and community histories in Canada: http://www.ourroots.ca/ |

Thank you for all the information on R.C. Bosworth jkmarler. It explains a lot. I'll need to contact CPR to see if they have Bosworkth's records on file some place (archived) so I can find where Ole Haugen was settled or what farm he worked on. I checked out Our Roots website but it appears there are no databases but lots of history books. Not sure where to start on books when I do not have a location to check. I may get a response from the Canadian Legion regarding the burial of Pvt Ole P Haugen to see if there is any connection there. Again thank you for your assistance. |

Are there other databases besides the "Vermont, St. Albans - Canadian Border Crossings 1895-1954" that contain records of Canadians coming to the USA? |

I just discovered today that Ole Haugen age 24 born 1906 Norway arrived in the US in 1930 from Canada. This information is from the Index to Alien Arrivals at Canadian Atlantic and Pacific Seaports, 1904-1944. However, it doesn't include where he crossed or any additional information. No old photo either. This database appears to be different than the VT St Albans Canadian Border Crossings. Any suggestions? |

Ole Paul Arnesen Haugen was born on April 9, 1906 in Tynset Hedmark Norway. This is confirmed by his son and relatives in Norway in which I am communicating with. He emigrated to Canada on April 30, 1930 on the Duchess of York. He arrived in Quebec City Quebec on May 9, 1930. Even though the manifest says he was going to Winnipeg Manitoba to work for the CPR I believe he may have jumped ship and crossed over to the USA in 1930. The Index to Alien Arrivals at Canadian Atlantic and Pacific Seaports 1904-1944 shows Ole Haugen age 24 birth year 1906 entering the USA in 1930. Is there any way to get more information from this database?
The Ole Haugen you listed below was born in ND and is not our Ole. |

I maybe should add that this Ole Haugen fathered a child and left before it was born. So you could say - he didn't want to be found. |

Do you have a baptism record for him?
Do you know the names of his parents?
The only Ole born in April of 1906 is the one I posted above. He is listed as having been born on April 19 and baptized on June 3, 1906. His name is given as Ole Paul. His father is named Arne Olsen Haugen. I think you need to take a look at that data.
Click on the Link below and look at the record for #7 at the boys in the upper section.

Here is the emigration record transcribed in Digitalarkvt which also gives his birth as April 19, 1906. Also click on the Link

I will email the relatives again. They looked at the records and I didn't. However, they did say the church records say the brother (Olav) to Ole is the father to the relative (son) I am helping. His name is Arne Haugen. They told me Ole was baptized on December 25, 1931 in Alvdal. Parents on record were Liv Borghild Mikkelsen and Olav Arnesen Haugen. They were not married. However, Olav and Ole are brothers and the relatives say that Ole emigrated when Liv was found pregnant. This is all rather confusing to say the least. I just started where I could find him emigrating and then found a stonewall once he arrived at Quebec City. I will get them to confirm the birth date. All other information appears correct. |

The relatives confirmed that Ole's birth date is April 19 as listed in your link. My contact corrected his typo. Sorry for the error. Do you agree that this Ole Haugen crossed the border and came to the USA in 1930? |

I think it is clear that your Ole Haugen arrived in Canada in 1930 as this record attests to.
Ole Aenesen Haugen in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 Name: Ole Aenesen Haugen Gender: Male Age: 24 Birth Year: abt 1906 Birth Country: Norway Date of Arrival: 9 May 1930 Vessel: Duchess of York Port of Arrival: Quebec, Canada Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
It is possible that the second record is the same person shown crossing into the US, however you are lacking any real proof of that. So I think that is still an open question. I have not found any other records for Ole Haugen crossing into the US in 1930. Those other records would be useful to bring some certainty to the question is this really the same Ole Haugen.
Ole Haugen in the U.S., Index to Alien Arrivals at Canadian Atlantic and Pacific Seaports, 1904-1944 Name: Ole Haugen Age: 24 Birth Year: abt 1906 Arrival Year: 1930 Arrival Country: USA
It is likely the the two are the same, We know that his contact Rhey Bosworth lived in several places in the US and worked for the CPR as a representative. One of his jobs was apparently to help emigrants buy farm land. I do not know if that farm land was in Canada, the US or both. So Ole could have arrived in Canada, joined to Winnipeg and met Rhey there and never came to the US or he could have done any number of versions of traveling to and from the US. However it is clear that he did not leave many tracks to follow. |
