Anything on the marriage certificate regarding Ole's status, single, widowed or divorced?

Yes - on the marriage certificate it listed Ole as a bachelor. Taking that at face value it would mean that Ole wasn't married before. Correct? I also received the funeral notice for Lillian Haugen that died October 26, 1937 as I wondered if she may have been Ole's first wife. But after reading her obituary I found out she married an Ole Haugen in 1927. Three years before our Ole came to Canada. Still waiting for the 1940 census papers to arrive plus Ole's military service papers. More to come. Things are coming together. The family was hoping for a photo and I thought there might be something in his military file. Hoping to find out more soon.

Received the 1940 census document yesterday. It confirms the birth date, parents and that Ole was single. It also stated that Ole served in the Norwegian military in 1927-28. So we do have the correct Ole. If Ole was listed as single in 1940 I believe that his marriage to Elva A. Peak in 1941 was his first and only marriage. The document states that Ole was farming his entire life. So I believe he was a farmer laborer his entire life and worked for other farmers. It doesn't appear that he owned any land as nothing is listed on his death certificate or his divorce papers. Now to see if we have any extra information with his military service in the R.C.O.C. Sure wish we could find a photo of him.

The Veterans Affairs from Canada do not have any records of Ole Haugen. So I've contact the Library and Archives of Canada and requested military information for Ole Haugen by sending them a copy of his death certificate that states he served in the Canadian armed forces during WWII. Hope eventually to get some military information on him. I can't believe that there is none.

That's just the way to do it. If you don't get what you need one way, wind up and try another. Sorry that Veterans affairs didn't help, maybe next department will.

Maybe he was undercover?

Still waiting for the Canadian Archives - did receive a letter stating they had a back log and would get back to me in about 10 months. What a wait. So I'm working to update our local cemetery records and trying to locate a birth date for a family. Is there any way to access bygdebok for the area Ostfold, Tune Sarpsborg for the Farm Minge? It would be either in the Glemmen or Fredrikstad bygdebok. I am working to find the emigration of Mathias Anderson who worked on this farm between 1865 and 1869 and had a wife Bertha Marie and 3 children. It would appear he emigrated to the USA between 1869 and 1873. Are bygdeboks located at the UND Library in Grand Forks, ND and accessible?

Yes they are, contact Michael Swanson, Research Librarian and he will help you in your search. UND will charge you a nominal fee for the work but I have always found it worthwhile.

Might this be your guy 33 yrs old leaving in 1870:

Berte leaving in 1870
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000408548

Emilie leaving in 1870:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000408549

Marie leaving in 1870:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000408550

Edvard leaving in 1870:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000408551

One of the shortcomings of the current and most recent before renditions of the emigration database is that it is not so easy to view the family leaving together as a unit. The older edition does allow a view of the family together.

According to this #7-8 right page he & she left Tune in 1870 for Glemminge:
SAO, Tune prestekontor Kirkebøker, F/Fa/L0015: Parish register (official) no. 15, 1869-1873, p. 251

Thank you so much for the UND information and also information from the digitalarkivet. I will check this out soon. I tried several times checking the digitalarkivet but had trouble reading the handwriting. I can usually decipher it but this time the handwriting was very difficult. I have been busy with the Sons of Norway activities - we celebrated Syttende Mai as a community activity and so were involved with music and presentations over the past several days. Lots of fun. You guys are so wonderful to work with. You always come up with other areas to explore. Thank you so much for your time and love of the Norwegian heritage.

I have found the church records for Mathias Anderson and his wife Bertha with children Emilie Caroline, Edvard and Julie Marie emigrating in 1870. <https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/460/229> SAO, Tune prestekontor Kirkebøker, F/Fa/L0015: Ministerialbok nr. 15, 1869-1873, s. 251. Bottom of this page on the right side. However, I can not find them on any passenger list on your website. Your first link is correct, but I can not find the St. Olaf line on your website. Are you able to find it?

I believe the wife Bertha died in Minnesota between arriving there in 1870 and 1873 when 2 additional children were born but are shown on census as half-sister/brother. However, she doesn't appear in the MN death records that are online. Any suggestions?

A death 1870-1873 is probably only a county level record if it exists at all and predates the state level found in the database.

Her death might be in a church record so a search of the ELCA databases at Archives.com and / or Ancestry Library edition.

Also if they stayed at Red Wing or Goodhue county for a while, there is Dalbydata.com's cemetery database.

This link didn't work for me. Workable links are not found in the browser window of the parish register page. If you hit the icon on the bar that looks roughly like figure of a human with their arms up, it copies all the identifying information and the true link to your clipboard and you can then paste it in a message. However the physical description looks very similar to what I've already posted, page 251, etc. The parents are named there but no children that I saw.

Here are the voyage schedules of the St. Olaf from this site. I didn't find it with the ship or line engine but by selecting the year of the voyage:from the departures engine.
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=stola

It appears that the ship connected to Hamburg, Germany and most likely the passengers changed ships for the transatlantic voyage. I guess I hadn't realized that Hamburg was a destination like Hull England, but until I hear otherwise that's what I think.

jkmarler - sorry I didn't know how to copy that link. Thanks for explaining about the icon. Here is the link from the church records showing the entire family is emigrating to America. SAO, Glemmen prestekontor Kirkebøker, F/Fa/L0008: Parish register (official) no. 8, 1862-1871, p. 430
Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060330020664 Your link above is just about the same - only it did not reflect the entire family leaving so I kept searching to see if they remained in Norway or went with Mathias.

Again thanks for the suggestions on the databases for deaths. I did not know when the state exactly started its database, but I did notice in my search that MN databases were missing my dates. I will check on the databases you suggested and also check further on the voyage records. Hope you're enjoying the warmer weather!
