This lady went to the beach in Naples Fl on her 103 birthday. The newspaper report was vague on her background so i would like to give her more info/reminders. She was reportedly born Jan12, 1916 in Torpa Norway. No idea what her maiden name was but there were 6 sisters and 3 brothers in her family . Border crossing info shows her arriving in Buffalo NY Feb2, 1944. 1945 immig records show her married to Sverre, 4 yrs older than Solveig. 1954 record show her traveling with Sverre and daughter Susan, born about 1945 in NY. Any info regarding her family in Norway would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Robert Olson, another Norwegian |

It must be this one:
#2, Solveig, born 12 Jan 1915 Parents: Ole Olsen Husværet & Petra Olsdr Husværet farm is in Torpa, Nordre Land, Oppland
She had 5 sisters and 3 brothers: Marie, 1901. Married Ruud Ingeborg, 1904 Olaug, 1907 Hansine, 1909 Berthe, 1913 Ola, 1917-1919 Ola, 1920 Håkon, 1922 Link
The Torpa farm history book confirms that Solveig married Sverre Birkeland.
The farmname Husværet was changed to Lauvli in 1915, so Solveig could have gone by the maiden name Lauvli or Olsen. Her husband Sverre is from Haugesund, Rogaland. His parents: Severin & Kristine Birkeland

Solveigs father Craftsman and tailor Ole Olsen Husværet b. 1867 on Husværet with 2 brothers and a sister Marie and parents Cottager and Carpenter Ole Olsen and Tailor Mari Andersdatter in 1900
She has baptism and confirmation records from Norway that tells she was born 1915. But her US Citizenship papers mark her birth year as 1916. 1915 is correct.

Birkeland is the farm where Sverre was born. It's located in Sveio, Hordaland, just north of Haugesund.
Sverre's parents are Laurits Severin Birkeland (1884-1928) and Kristine Taletta Birkeland (nee: Lier) (1885-1975)
Severin in Census-1900 Kristine in Census-1900 Severin & Kristine in Census-1910

My mother and her 8 siblings do not have the same surname as their parents. Their surname is the name of the farm they were born on. Was this some type of law or merely common practice? |
