Then there is this arrival to muddy things up a little.

Pauline Nielsdatter Hjülstad
in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: Pauline Nielsdatter Hjülstad
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Birth Year: abt 1843
Date of Arrival: Jul 1868
Vessel: Franklin
Port of Arrival: Canadatrt

If the above birth year is off a lot as I suspect it is then this might be Pauline having a cild with the companion to Iver Hjulstad on his emigration record Lornets P Ulstad.

Lorentz Pettersen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Lorentz Pettersen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 5 jan 1856
Baptism Date: 10 feb 1856
Baptism Place: Inderøy, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
Name Note: Illegitimate
Father: Petter Lorentzsen Lille Ulstad
Mother: Pauline Nielsdatter Hjulstad
FHL Film Number: 307050
Reference ID: vn 8 p 12 cn 13

Very complicated

Possibly Lawrence Ulstad in L.A., census-1930.
Census-1900 shows the family in Thief River Falls city, Red Lake, Minnesota.

I believe this could be the Pauline which are referenced as emigrated from Hjulstad, and a sister of Iver.
But her age indicate she's born 1867, so the farm history book could be wrong, and that she is a niece of Iver.

Likely this one:
Washington Death Certificates
Name Pauline Olson Hjulsted
Event Date 02 Aug 1958
Event Place Seattle, King, Washington
Gender Female
Age (Formatted) 88 years
Birth Year (Estimated) 1870

This Pauline's obituary says she is survived by only a cousin Mrs. Alex Ruske of Duluth, Minnesota. Since her patronymic is Olson she seems unlikely to be Iver's sister. Found no Alex Ruske but there is an Axel Ruske in St. Louis county, Minnesota. Here is his marriage from MOMS:
ST. LOUIS
O-115
11/19/1899
RUSKE, AXEL
OLSON, JULIA

Pauline born 07 Jul 1867 is daughter of Ole Pedersen Hjulstad & Henrika Olsdr.
Thus; not a sister, and not a niece...

Thomas Norman Ulstad*

In the records he consistently has a birth year of 1855 or 1856 which does not quite fit the original post. So I wonder if this Lars P Ulstad found in the 1880 Census might be him. Although Watonwan County is a long way from Red Lake County although both are in Minnesota

I am going to print the whole thing since Anne does not want to use Family Search.

Here is a 1910 Census for probably the Lawrence Ulstad found by Jan Peter in LA in 1900. Shows his arrival year as 1881 a match for the Lars Ulstad that Anne is seeking. But this would not be a good match for the Lars P Ulstad whose 1880 Census I posted above. Here is the 1910 Census. Also it should be noted that the 1900 Census posted by Jan Peter gives an immigration year of 1877. Confusion reigns supreme.
