If anyone knows any way that I could find out information aboutmy father's family, who according to him came from the Oslo, Norway area, that would be great. I know his name, but I know nothing about his parents.

Your best bet is to click on the Digitalarkivet link listed below. You might be able to find him in the census (click on categories)
Depending on when and where he was born in Norway you might find some info at the LDS http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
This website has a lot of info on researching Norwegian ancestors
