I have traced my great-grandmother Borghild Jonsdtter Kvamshaugen Lappegard's 1/17/1851-10/17/1910 mother - Rangdi Olsdatter Kvamshaugen Onstad 1817-1887 and ALSO her father John Jensen Ohnstad 1812-1886 back to two sons of Sander Sanderson Roo 1604-1677. Rangdi's side goes back to Knut Sanderson Roo 1632-1711 and John Jensen Ohstad's side goes back to Guttorm Sanderson Roo 1650-1711. So it looks like I have a double relationship with the Roo's! Does this sound all right with you? Is that possible? or am I in need of correction? |

Many people in Hol Hallingdal descend from Sander on Roo. The far back fellow came from Scotland, married Ragnhild Asgautsdatter. Personally, I have at least 2 descending lines from him myself. Where have you been researching them that has caused you a question? |

Most of my information comes from my cousin in Norway - we do one generation at a time and then it started to go this way to Sander Sanderson Roo II and I thought we had made a mistake. I enjoy reading the history of some of them. I am glad to hear that others have a double genealogy to him too. I thought it was odd but I know now that it can happen. |

Hol is a small place and you are likely to be your own cousin many times. |

Are your two lines connected to Guttorm and Knut? The two of three sons of Sander Sanderson Roo II. This is so interesting. |

Actually I just looked at my database and it's three lines and they all go through Sander Sanderson b 1604.
So through Kari Sandersdatter, Knut Sanderson, and Ragnhild Sandersdatter. |

Very likely the source that May and her Norwegian relative are working from are the bygdebĝker of Hol called Folk og Fortid i Hol by Lars Reinton and Sigurd Reinton.. Even though these books are excellent, very few errors, they are to be considered a secondary source as all bygdebĝker are. Findings in them should be confirmed in the parish registers and other records as sourced in the books themselves.
But Hol is a small place, which was very isolated, serviced by a two wheel wagon rut road up until 1909 when the Bergensbanen came to the place. There was a particular opportunity there after the Plague came through in the mid 1300s when many, many farms were left empty.. This opportunity is probably what brought the Scotsman Sander to the parish in the first place. His life and the lives of his descendants are definitely within the historical records period as opposed to medieval or Viking records periods.
In the book The Mountain of Names by Alex Shoumatoff, it is mentioned that 85% of the "marriages" performed under the eye of God since time began are between second cousins or closer.
The thing about Folk og Fortid is that it makes discovering these connections much easier. |

A Norwegian Family tree and house mark,SS, for Sander Sanderson Rĝo. He was red haired and his descendants were called "Skotto" lokal for Scotsman, in several hundred years after he died. He wrote perfect Danish, so perhaps he was educated in Denmark link
He died in Sigdal |

I so appreciate all of this information. Will continue to check up on all of this. What a wonderful place to ask questions. I don't belong to the Hallinglag but can I still subscribe to the Hallingen magazine? |

He was a Scottish noble man and his family supported Queen Mary. When she fell he had to leave Scotland, probably with his father, and ended first in Denmark. Sanders profession at that time was Tailor.
One of his descendants in Vestfossen has a small breweri, SAUNDERS BREWERY link |

The name Sander/Sandersen is connected to Aleksander, a common name on in the Scottish MacDonald Clan, probaly the clan from Glengarry or Clanranald. This part of the Mac Donald Clan was opponents to Queen Mary's predecessor James V ca 1540. His son James VI was Q. Mary's sucessor 1567.

Folk og Fortid i Hol , volume VI page 192-193 identifies three children all sons of Sander the Scot:
Johannes Sanderson, known to be called Johannes Sanderson Hove and the worker of nordre Uppsata in Aal.
Sander Sanderson b 1604
Tomas Sanderson was married and thought to be living in 1643. |
