I'm chasing a Gregers Andersen Kure (born 09.08.1840 at Kure in Rygge, Norway, died in 1920 in Detroit). Married to Mary (born in the United States). He emigrated to the United States and was the first merchant in Detroit for 20 years. He called himself George (Anderson). He is supposed to have founded his own bank, but I have not confirmed this. Does anyone have any information?

The 1910 US census might answer a question about the name of George's American wife Mary (if this is the right George, he's living in Detroit): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MLTD-BF3 Perhaps the "B" stands for Birchard?
George Anderson Head M 70 Norway Mary B Anderson Wife F 68 Michigan Cordelia W Birchard Mother-in-law F 87 New York Mary Noyes Cousin F 42 Michigan Cordelia M Birdsall Cousin F 19 Michigan Margaret Bender Servant F 22 Michigan
Looking at the actual census schedule tells that George and Mary have each been married 1 time for 42 years and that Mary has had no children, and that George came to US in 1860 and is retired and they reside at 103 Ferry. Avenue E. |

This may be George and Mary in 1870 in Detroit: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHCR-VH8
George Anderson M 32 Norway Mary Anderson F 23 Michigan
George is working as a store clerk and has $500 in personal property.and he and Mary are not marked as having married within the census year. |

In the 1880 census George and Mary are still in Michigan: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MW3P-448
George Anderson Self M 45 Norway Mary Anderson Wife F 33 Michigan, United States Calvin D Caty Other M 28 Ohio, United States
George's occupation is given as "banker." Calvin is a boarder and is a professor of music. |

In 1900 census George and Mary are still in Detroit: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9BY-DSC
George Anderson Head M 11 Norway Mary B Anderson Wife F 55 Michigan Anna C Berry Servant F 26 Canada
A very bad transcription error gives his age as above but the actual schedule gives birth date as Jan 1839 and age as 61, occupation as banker, 1860 as year of migration, 40 years in US and that he is naturalized. They are living in a rented home at 78 Stinesen place. There is no answer for how many children Mary has had or how many are living. |

The research jkmarler has posted answers the opening question. To add:
I didn't find any "Gregers" born in Rygge in 1840, as was claimed at the start, but here is Gregers born 24 January 1839: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/415/2637/12
