Herman Jansen 1743 in Aker. His mother Katrine according to the Millennium file Did some children take their mothers maiden name. Father was Jan Hermansen.?

It is perfectly logical and fairly standard for a long time period in Norway that Herman the son of Jan Hermanson would be known as Jansen.

Adopting your mother's name, first or patronymic, into your surname would be extremely unusual.
