Hello

I really enjoyed the artical about the SS Romeo that sailed between Gothenburg and Hull and also the information about the accomodations and train trip from Hull to Liverpool. You have provided for me an idea of what my ancestors trip was like. My ancestors immagrated in 1884 so I feel all of this information can pertain to their trip. Their trip from Gothenburg to Hull was on the SS Romeo.
Is the picture of the SS Romeo on your website the same ship?

I am also looking for any information on the SS Egypt. The Egypt was the ship that they were on when they crossed the Atlantic. I don't know much about this ship other than it was built by the National Lines of Liverpool. Is there any more information out there on this ship and does anyone know where I my obtain a picture of this ship?

Thank you,
Michael

Hi Michael

Yes, the S/S Romeo of the Wilson Line, which is on the picture, is the ship your ancestor was on from Gothenburg to Hull.

The S/S Egypt of the National Line was built in 1871 for the National Steamship Co. Her tonnage was 4670 tons. She had two funnels and four masts, and was rigged for sail on the foremast. She was lost when she caught fire at sea in July 1890. No human lives lost, but 600 cattle were lost in the sinking. There is a picture of the ship in in Michael J. Anuta's book, "Ships of Our Ancestors", (1983)
