A pity my ancestor wasn’t the first. He wasn’t the second, either, but he could be the third if it wasn’t for Knute. My Marie and Jens had a daughter born in 1856, called Kjerstine at the Christening and Kirstine at the emigration entry in the Ringsaker ministerial book. Where did you find these data from the civil war? |

The info is taken from soldier profiles @ Vesterheim and NAGCNL.
Census-1900 shows that the Mary Hanson in question immigrated about 1850. So likely not a good kandidate. Question is; is this really the wife of Jens Hanson of Onalaska, Wis. |

Here is the original handwritten census 1860 in Neshonoc, LaCrosse, Wisconsin: 1860 Neshonoc
I read every page - no family similar to Jens Hansen. I'm uncertain if this is the only census report for Neshonoc. Other census reports exist for nearby areas.
Here's a map of LaCrosse county from the 1870s, showing the townships. A township is a rural area that may include several villages and towns. 1870s map

Going through the 1860 Census by Township did not turn up any family that resembled Jens Hansen, wife and children. I felt that I should surely be able to find the Jens Hansen and family discussed by Jan Peter on page one.
3) Jens Hanson, born about 1816 in Norway. Married and resided in Onalaska, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin. Discharged from the service at Jacinto, Mississippi, on account of disability, 6 Aug 1862. After the war, he moved back to La Crosse County. He and his wife, Mary, had 4 children. By 1900, only 2 were still living, including Knute (1856). Mary was living with Knute at the time of the 1900 Census, as Jens died before 1890.
The closest I came to this family is this one.
Brown Hanson in the 1860 United States Federal Census Name: Brown Hanson Age: 36 Birth Year: abt 1824 Gender: Male Birth Place: Norway Home in 1860: Jackson, La Crosse, Wisconsin Post Office: La Crosse Dwelling Number: 2246 Family Number: 1915 Occupation: Farmer Real Estate Value: 1200 Personal Estate Value: 350 Household Members: Name Age Brown Hanson 36 Mary Hanson 30 Hans Hanson 10 Helen Hanson 6 Kund Hanson 4 Sike Hanson 24
Birth date of husband is about right, wife is named Mary and one child is named Knute. But names are not very close, only three children not four and I have no idea why the name Brown and who Sika is.

The only other Hanson family of interest that I found while searching through the Townships of La Crosse County was this one.
John Hanson in the 1860 United States Federal Census Name: John Hanson Age: 49 Birth Year: abt 1811 Gender: Male Birth Place: Norway Home in 1860: Buchanan, La Crosse, Wisconsin Post Office: La Crosse Dwelling Number: 1507 Family Number: 1282 Occupation: Farmer Household Members: Name Age John Hanson 49 Force Hanson 19 Helena Hanson 16 Rachel Hanson 14 Hans Hanson 12 Christine Hanson 9 |

The table I linked to from my original post contained the farm names of the emigrants. I think I have seen the first of them, Sørum, in the 1880 census, used by the same people now living in anorher state. I hope to get the time to set up an expanded table with matches in other censuses than the 1870 one, and containing more Ringsaker people. |

Here are the first Jens Hansen proved up homesteads at the Bureau of Land Management sites. One of these might be target Jens or none of them might be target Jens:

Yes, obviously Tore - I had already seen that. Thanks.
To clarify, my question was: Are there any other farm names the Jens Hansen family might use - possibilities that are NOT on the table.
As we all know, Norwegian immigrants adopted a permanent surname in the USA, either a patronym or a version of the farm name (usually the farm name used in the emigration record). But as a long shot, less commonly, the family used another, different farm name.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. (And grateful for your efforts.) Most of these people, including Jens and Marie, were "husmannsfolk", i.e., they didn't own any land themselves, just rented some small, dependent farm (plass) and often moved several times during a lifetime. Jens came from the "plass" Lillebratten under the farm Jemtland. The places of residence for the couple when the three younger children were baptized in 1844, 1848 and 1856, were given as Dahlbye, Langkloppen and Blaaserbrænden, respectively. I am not sure if these are different names for the same "plass". |

I am assuming that you are building up a data base and are also hopeful that the data base will lead to Jens Hansen and family. Here is another family to add to the list of 1870 families.
This is likely the family of Ole Thomessen Økildsrudeie
Thomas Thompson in the 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Thomas Thompson Age in 1870: 16 Birth Year: abt 1854 Birthplace: Norway Dwelling Number: 38 Home in 1870: Holland, La Crosse, Wisconsin Race: White Gender: Male Occupation: Farm Laborer Father of Foreign Birth: Y Mother of Foreign Birth: Y Inferred Father: Ole Thompson Inferred Mother: Anna Thompson Household Members: Name Age Ole Thompson 48 Anna Thompson 46 Thomas Thompson 16 Anna Thompson 11
Ole Thompson in the 1880 United States Federal Census Name: Ole Thompson Age: 59 Birth Date: Abt 1821 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1880: Holland, La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Dwelling Number: 136 Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Self (Head) Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Agneth Thompson Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Occupation: Farmer Cannot Write: Yes Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Ole Thompson 59 Agneth Thompson 53 Thomas O. This person has a Family Tree for this family on Ancestry.com

After finding the ELCA record on Anna Thompson in Holmen Wisconsin, I followed up with a search for Hansen in that same church.
Klara Julie Hansen in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1826-1969 Name: Klara Julie Hansen Record Type: Confirmation Birth Date: 13 Jan 1878 Confirmation Date: 8 Mar 1878 Father: Matthias Hansen Mother: Karoline Kristoffersdtr Church Name: Halfway Creek Congregation Church Location: Holmen, Wisconsin
Died in 1891, above record looks more like a baptism not a confirmation. Witnesses are Andreas Hansen Ekerdal, or K Lars Hansen og Eline Hansdatter.
Clara Julie Hansen in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1826-1969 Name: Clara Julie Hansen Death Age: 13 Record Type: Burial Birth Date: 13 Jan 1878 Birth Place: Lu and Co Wisconsin, USA Death Date: 27 Mar 1891 Burial Date: 30 Mar 1891 Father: Matthew Hansen Mother: Karoline Christopusdr Church Name: Halfway Creek Congregation Church Location: Holmen, Wisconsin
So if the child was born in 1878 and died in 1891, why are they so hard to find in the 1880 Censu.
