Hello. I am in search of pictures, paintings or drawings of the SS "Cordillera", a steamer owned by the Pacific Steam Navigation Company (PSNC) that brought many settlers from the western coast of Europe to Patagonia and the coasts of Chile. Here is some data about this vessel:
Date built: 1869 Flag: British Tonnage: 2.860 grt Dimensions: 107,7 x 12,5 x 7,5 mt. Hull: Iron Power: 2 cylinder steam engine, 500 HP Of. number: 63189
The SS "Cordillera" finished her days on september 1884 when struck a reef in the Strait of Magellan, south of the city of Punta Arenas with no casualties.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks very much for your contribution, jwiborg. I know this painting that shows a steamer with the same features as the SS "Cordillera". However, I have my doubts about the issue because this vessel hoists a US flag on top the foremast, and, first, the Cordillera was built for and owned by the Pacific Steam Navigation Company (PSNC), a british company, and never sold to any other shipowner; the steamer in the picture doesn't show any Union Jack flag raised. And second inconsistency, the SS "Cordillera" was ever assigned to the route Liverpool - Ports of call in Holland, France and Spain - South Pacific Ports, via the Strait of Magellan; therefore, she never sailed northamerican waters and so there was no reason to rise the US flag. Nevertheless, I have found that several sources in internet state that the vessel pictured in the painting is the Cordillera.
Many thanks again for your post. |
