I've added in a lot of information to my MyHeritage family tree and i'm getting a lot of matches, both records and actual matches with people. The way downwards should be relatively easy now. I guess the focus now would be going up after his father. The name I have currently is Torje Tostensen and Anne Kirstine Olsdatter for his wife. I think you posted his marriage records with that name, so I suppose the name is Torje/Terje Tostensen/Thorstensen.

This is what I have added so far, I figure it would be a good idea to let you guys know what you've helped achieve, plus perhaps you'll find more information.

Father: Johan Severin Olsen born on the 4th of August 1834
Mother: Tarjer Jørgensdatter born around 1835
Daughter: Amalie Serine Johansdatter born on the 9th of October 1861
Son: Ole Teodor Johansen born on the 8th of July 1863
Son: Jørgen Johansen born around 1864
Son: Bernt Severin Johansen born around 1867
Daughter: Anne Kirstine Johansdatter born around 1869
Son: Johan Taresius Johansen born on the 8th of September 1872
Daughter: Jørgine Olivia Johansdatter born on the 12th of May 1875

For those with a full birth date I either saw their names in a record with a full birth date and/or I got a match right away on MyHeritage, currently three of the childern are "unconfirmed" in that regard and I believe that Jørgen Johansen died young.

Father: Carl Kristian Olsen born on 5th of May 1837
Mother: Tarine Knudsdatter born around 1843
Daughter: Chirsten Helene Carlsdatter born around 1866
Son: Knud Carlsen born around 1869
Daughter: Anne Seselie Carlsdatter born around 1873
Son: Ole Severin Carlsen born on the 19th of August 1875

For those with a full birth date I either saw their names in a record with a full birth date and/or I got a match right away on MyHeritage, currently three of the childern are "unconfirmed" in that regard.

Anne Kirstine Olsdatter born on the 29th of September 1839. (I have a match for her with a husband and a lot of childern, have not yet added them in.)

Secilia Olsdatter born on 21th of October 1841. (Presumed to have died young as illustrated by the "dead" in her Norwegian birth record, do not have a date of death)

Father: Ole Andreas Olsen born on the 11th of November 1844
Mother: Tobine Kornelie Tønnesdatter born on the 14th of May 1844
Daughter: Johanne Teodre Olsdatter born on the 4th of September 1870
Daughter: Anna Olivia Olsdatter born on the 8th of November 1872
Son: Ole Theodor Olsen born on the 30th of June 1880
Son: Johan Severin Olsen born on the 28th of August 1884
Son: Tomas Georg Olsen born on the 28th of August 1884

I've learned that the spelling might be different in some of the names but this is what I have managed to find thanks to everyone that has helped so far.

For Carl and Tarine

You are missing an early Ole Severin, probably means he died young.

Name: Ole Severin Carlsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 11 sep 1864
Baptism Date: 15 okt 1864 (15 Oct 1864)
Baptism Place: Flosta, Aust-Agder, Norway
Father: Carl Christian Olsen
Mother: Tarine Knudsdr

Name: Kirsten Helene Carlsdr
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 21 nov 1866
Baptism Date: 16 des 1866 (16 Dec 1866)
Baptism Place: Flosta, Aust-Agder, Norway
Father: Carl Christian Olsen
Mother: Tarine Knudsdr

A little spelling change just to keep you awake

Name: Knud Karl Kristiansen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 3 aug 1869
Baptism Date: 15 aug 1869
Baptism Place: Flosta, Aust-Agder, Norway
Father: Karl Kristian Olsen
Mother: Tarine Knudsdr

Check the spelling in the original record for the spelling of the middle name

Name: Anne Leselie Olsen
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 3 aug 1873
Baptism Place: Flosta, Aust-Agder, Norway
Father: Carl Christian Olsen
Mother: Torine Knudsdr

Birth date is July 17 and name hard to read. Gothic is a bit of a challenge.

Why is his name "Bernt Severin Johan Severinsen" and not "Bernt Severin Johansen"? Isn't he supposed to take the name from his father directly and not the second name of his father?

The actual birth/baptismal records listed ONLY the child's given name(s). The person doing the indexing of the records is interpreting what the 'surname' is and often those volunteers doing that work did NOT really understand patronymic naming. That is probably why you find all those variations.

The Ancestry.com Norwegian birth databases were originally indexed by volunteers of the Mormon church and are included in their free FamilySearch.org website and a later agreement was reached to share that work with Ancestry.

A nice explanation by Hopkins on why the names in Ancestry.com are really not the names the person in Norway might have used. In the 1875 Census also posted by Hopkins on the first page the son is using or is given the name Bernt Severin Johansen as you might have expected.

To find what name he might have used through his life you need to track him through various events. HIs marriage and the census records are probably most findable.

In the 1910 Census he is called Bernt Johansen.

1910

The last person on the list appears to be his mother. She was called Terjer Jørgensdatter on the 1875 Census but here she is called Terjer Olsen.

Her birth date is given in the 1910 Census as May 21, 1835 in Froland. Looking that up in the original records one finds a Tarjer baptism date June 8, 1835. The birth date looks to me a little hard to determine if it is 20 or 21 May.

Fourth record from the bottom right hand page

Link

Her parents are Jørgen Johnsen Bratteland and Anne Olsdatter.

Probably her sister born in 1829.

Name: Berthe Jørgensdatter
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 16 apr 1829
Baptism Place: Den Norske kirke, Froland, Aust-Agder, Norway
Father: Jørgen Johnson Bratteland
Mother: Anne Olsdatter

Might be difficult but starting with the marriage record you might be able to put together a list of children.

There is a discussion on Slektforum about this family. In Norwegian of course but the basics are.

A couple Torsten Tojusen and his wife Asloug Andersdatter (1745 - 1835) lived at Hagestadeie in Holt in 1787, together with their two children Torje (1775 - 1841) and Anders (1776 - 1840) . Both sons lived at Vatnebu in Flosta where Torje eventually got a large family at Lønvik. One son was named Tosten Lind Terjesen (1798-1875).

Seems to correlate with parts of the Geni Tree you linked to.

And a longer discussion at Arkiveverket

That one is long enough probably need some help with.

Here is a discussion, I have not worked through yet but could use another set of eyes.

Link

Never mind, it looks like a repeat of the discussion above when you get near the end.

However from the first discussion is this, which I have not been able to find in the original records. Did not look hard enough see below.

Tosten og Asloug `s vielse KB Vinje 1767-1814, side 32 på 1774 den 19 juli. Det står ikke noe om alder eller født hvor Crying or Very sad
De flyttet vel kanskje derfra til Hogestad?
Torje`s konfirm. KB Holt 1765-1798 , side 371 nr. 23.
Anders sin konf. finner jeg ikke, men kan ha oversett.

It starts out with questions about the Knutsen and Knutsdatters on Vatnebu. Then they discuss a bit some of the other patronymics on Vatnebu. The Oddbjorn Johannesen posts links for family events in Vinje in Telemarken for Terjesen and Tostensen, which appear to relate to the search here. Then back to Anne Knudsdatter where the questions started.

I did find the original record for the marriage of Tosten Torjesen and Asloug Andersdatter on July 19, 1774

Right hand page Married in Vinje Telemark

Link

Also found the confirmation of Torje Tostensen Hagestadeie see far right hand page number 23

#23

And here is a Geni.com Tree for this couple and some children. Does not connect with the other Geni.com Tree. Not unusual for trees with the same family members to stand alone on Geni. Also seems to have the birth place as Vinje, Bø, Nordland, which makes no sense to me.

But this one gives the family that Sven is researching except for Terje Andreas.

Geni Tree

It does give the baptism record for Terje son of Tosten Terjesen who was baptized December 25, 1774. See left page 25 December

Link

And his wife Anne Kristine who was baptized July 26, 1774 in Holt, Dypvaag. Last record right hand page

Father is Ole Olsen Vantnebo

Probably this baptism record

Name: Anne Kirstine Olsen
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 26 jul 1774
Baptism Place: Flosta, Aust-Agder, Norway
Father: Ole Olsen
Mother: Allou Andersdr

You two have found a lot, i'm impressed. I've been able to add a lot to the family tree. I would help you guys translate if I could speak Norwegian, though I could probably google translate, but that wouldn't give the best result.
