I am looking for Saeterbakken location. I have a great uncle who had the name of Martinius Pedersen Saeterbakken born 12 Feb 1870. On Geni.com his birth location is: Saeterbakken, Eina, Vistre Toten, Oppland, Norway. What is Saeterbakken and where is it located in regards to Eina? His nephew (my g-father was born on Skinderviken Farm south of Eina. Is This a Farm? |

Saeterbakken, Eina, Vistre Toten, Oppland,
Gaard, Sokn, Prestegjeld, Fylke, In Norwegian
Farm, Local Parish, Clerical District, County Translated into English
The Clerical Districts are also referred to as Parish
The Local Parish is also referred to as Sub-Parish and can be spelled either Sogn or Sokn.
Worth looking at this Family Search article on Elna
Elna
Original baptism record for him is number 44
#44
If that is a little hard to read here is the transcribed version

Here he is in the 1875 Norwegian Census on the Sæterbakken farm

Yes Skindeviken is also a farm. Here are the people living on that farm in 1875.

Searching for Sæterbakken on Norgeskart.no gives one match in Vestre Toten and one in Østre Toten. The one North of Eina is in Vestre Toten, and the one South of Eina is in Østre Toten. The line between the two municipalities is stippled in the map above, passing through the second k in Sæterbakken. So this latter Sæterbakken, although in the East part, is very close to the bordering line, and I read that this line has been subject to several revisions since 1870...
It does indeed look like this latter one, currently in Østre Toten, is the right one, for scrolling through the next farms in the 1875 census, one finds Torgunrud, Ensrud, etc., which are situated i the vicinity of the Southern/Eastern Sæterbakken.
A pity, for the other one even has this nice Facebook page. |

There are several Norwegian English genealogical dictionaries that you can use. Here is a definition from one of them.
prgj. abbr. for Prestegjeld prestegjeld clerical district, parish; see The Norwegian Church several "prestegjeld" makes one "prosti" A ecclesiastical district of administration which comprises two or more sub-parishes ("sogn"), headed by a rector.

There is also a different data base that I find useful as it gives a better overall look at the occupants of the farm. Here is SÆTERBAKKEN in 1875. If you click on the symbol by name you will get the 1865 Census data for that person.
1875
You might notice the variation in the spelling of the farm name. Very common.
Here is SKINDERVIKEN in 1875. You can click on Previous domicile or Next domicile to see the nearby farms. Many times there are more than one farm on the main farm and all use the same main farm name.

Thanks to all who posted responses. The 1875 indexed census records for both Saeterbakken and Skinderviken Farms by lyndal40 contained person(s) known as family members. Thanks for that info. I wish I had found this Norway-Heritage site sooner in my research. It is full of Wonderful information. I think the Saeterbakken farm SE of Eina, must have been in Vestre Toten back in 1875 per the post by Torel. Recorded ancestors have surnames of Skinderviken, Bjornerudsveen, Korslia, all in Vestre Toten AND Holjesveen, Solberg, Overset all in Ostre Toten. From Eina, Closer to SE Saterbakken then N Saterbakken. I couldn't believe how quick everyone responded. THANK YOU.
