It is always interesting to me to see how far back in time one can take a family tree.

Here is the marriage record for Gotskalk Mathiasen and Ranvey Davidsdatter in 1784.

Link

Last entry left hand page

Link

The 1801 Census listed Godsckalk Mathiasen as being born about 1746.

This is likely his transcribed baptism record.

Link

The date is 5 past trinitas. 1746, which in 1746 is July 10.

Here is the original record, Father is Mathias Mølster, Second entry left page

Link

The baptism records for Gotsckalk and some other probable siblings, all list the father with the name of Mathias Mølster. But there is a Mathias Biørnesen Mølster married in Voss, Hordaland in 1728 that probably gives us his last name and the name of his wife if we look up the original record. Here is the transcribed wedding record.

Link

Here is the original record for the marriage of Mathias Biørnesen Mølster and Ingeborg NIlsdatter Eide in 1728.

First record right hand page

Usually when one gets this far back in a family history you can find a Family Tree and most usually on Geni.com. Here is one for Mattis Bjarnesson Mølster, notice the spelling is a little different but it is the same person.

Geni.com

I do not know if you are familiar with the Geni website but if you click on Actions up in the right hand corner and then Ancestor Report you can see ancestors for this family back to about 1500. Now it is best to use a Bygdebok for Voss, Hordaland to confirm as best you can the family line.

So far we have not done much work on the father of Nels Brynildsen, However Tore did find his likely death record that shows hie was born around 1796. Here is a candidate born in 1799 from Ancestry.

Brynjeld Knudsen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Brynjeld Knudsen
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 28 apr 1799
Baptism Place: , Voss, Hordaland, Norway
Father: Knud Brynjeldsen
Mother: Marita Halstensdr
FHL Film Number: 124786

First entry right hand page, farm name is Skiple

Link

And the family in the 1801 Census, farm is not Skutle so we need some further proof before we can feel certain we have the right man.

Farm name is Skiple in baptism record and 1801 Census

1801

Knud Brynjelsen Ulven married Marta Halstensdatter Engeland June 9, 1788.

Link

Original record is first one on left page under Vinje (Winje)

Link

I notice that one of the witnesses is a Anders Godskalksen. Born about 1744 died 1811, also found in 1801 Census

1801

The best connection we have so far is that in the baptism record (1820) for Nils Brynildsen posted on page one the father is called Brynild Knutsen Ulven. And in the marriage record (1788) above the groom is named Knud Brynildsen Ulven.

And a confirmation record for Knud Brynjelsen Ulven in 1781. Born about 1766.

Not to leave any stones unturned. Here is a second candidate. Farm name here is Dugstad.

Brynjel Knudsen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Brynjel Knudsen
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 16 jun 1794
Baptism Place: , , Hordaland, NorwayVoss
Father: Knud Erichsen
Mother: Brita Brynielsdr
FHL Film Number: 124786

Link

The family on Dugstad in the 1801 Census

1801

Living on Dugstad for his confirmation in 1807

Link

He married Eli Knudsdatter June 10, 1824. Farm name is still Dugstad

#44

Had his first child Knud in 1825. Still using the Dugstad farm name

#23

Perhaps not a good candidate. Seems to have used the farm name Dugstad in all records that I have found.

Looking at marriages for a Brynildsen Knudsen in the time frame 1824 to 1842 the only marriage of interest out of the few found is one. All of the others the groom would be much too young to have fathered a child named Nils in 1820.

Brynild Knudsen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Brynild Knudsen
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 12 jun 1834
Marriage Place: Voss ,Hordaland,Norway
Father: Knud Brynilds.
Spouse: Marthe Olsdr
FHL Film Number: 124788

#23

The age of the groom is 35, so born about 1799 about right for the Brynild Knudsen born April 28, 1799 posted above. Farm name is Mølster. We ran into the Mølster farm earlier in this thread when discussing the father of Marith Godsckalk so they does seem to be some connection with families or at least geographic nearness.

So perhaps the father of your Nils Brynildsen born in 1820 out of wedlock did marry later in life ie 1834.

Father of bride is Ole Eriksen

Some information on the bride of Brynild Knudsen. Her parents are Ole Eriksen and Mari Joensdatter. She was born Jan 29, 1809

Link

An unmarried Ole Erichsen living on Wilke in the 1801 Census. Directly above him in the list is his future bided Mari Joensdatter

1801

It is possible that Maritha Olsdatter is alive and living on Aure Nedre in the 1865 Census. She is listed as a renter. From page one Tore found her probable husband died in 1854

1809

The couple of Brynild Knudsen and Marith Olsdatter Aure probably had one child.

A Marthe born Dec 10, 1837

Looks like the family of Brynild Knudsen, Marith Olsdatter and daughter Maritha left Skiple in 1841.
