I am trying to trace the brother of one of my ancestors, who moved from Bergen, Norway to Lüneburg in Germany around 1819, but then possibly emigrated from Germany to America in 1851.
Carl Bendix Togstad was born in Bergen on November 4th 1798, with parents Andreas Togstad and Margrethe Gregoriusdatter. His father was a master taylor, and Carl Bendix himself is a taylor's apprentice in the 1815 census. At the time of his father's death in 1837, Carl Bendix had (according to the probate records) been living in Lüneburg for the past 18 years. In Germany I have just one single possible trace after him, as a Schneidergeselle (taylor journeyman) Togstadt in Lüneburg is listed as an emigrant to America in 1851.
If there are any other traces to be found after him in Germany or the US, I would be thrilled to hear about it. In Norway I have already covered the ground extensively. |

I did not find much about immigration of any Togstad in the Ancestry.com data bases for the years 1845 to 1865. The only hit was this one.
I V Togstad in the England, Alien Arrivals, 1810-1811, 1826-1869 Name: I V Togstad Port of Arrival: London, England Arrival Date: 19 Sep 1853 Port of Departure: Hamburg, Germany Ship: Caledonia Country of Origin/Native of: Norway |

Thanks to both of you for the input. This is a difficult case, for many reasons, perhaps too difficult to even post here, but I couldn't resist the temptation. There is a handful of Togstad/Tokstad farms in different parts of Norway, and they probably all produced emigrants. Given the match in surname, profession and the city og Luneburg, the "Auswanderer" I found at the German archive is almost certainly my relative, but given the year this may not be Carl Bendix himslef, it could just as well be his son, whose first name we can only guess at. Maybe something that abbreviates to I V ? |

Spelling the Togstad name in Germanic fashion as in your link " Name, Vorname, Herkunft: Togstadt, Lüneburg " does turn up an additional record.
Adreß- und Handbuch der Stadt Lüneburg, 1862-1863 CITY & AREA DIRECTORIES View Image Record information. Residence 1862-1863 Sachsen,
And here is a screen shot of a portion of the image that seems to be for a Togstadt

Casting a wider net for birth year does turn up this record.

Wow, your find in the 1860 address book is super-interesting.
Your last find is a closer relative; my grandfather Knut Togstad was a student in Germany in the 1920ies... |

It may be that there are two separate residence records. The one from the German website for 1860 and the one on Ancestry.com for 1862-63. They both have the same information. Schneidermannamtbote translates literals as a Tailor delivery man, and I assume that the addresss that Mr. C Togstad lived at is number 80 Rothemauer. The Rothemauer does not have the str for strasse or street at the end so not a street but translates as Rothe mauer or red wall.
So at least for 1860 to 1860 to about 1863 a person named C Trogstedt who worked aa in some fashion as a tailor and lived at a number 80 in a building named for a red wall.
Could be your Carl Trogstad or perhaps his son? Maybe he left Germanu and then returned. |
