A likely marriage for John Nicholson from another Ancestry.com Tree.

John Nicholson

Name: John Nicholson
Gender: Male
Marriage License Date: 6 Sep 1946

If Catherine Smith married 1st to someone named Browne and then married Nicholson might be how that worked, otherwise????

The other issue is in the 1930 census her father's birthplace is not listed as Norway, even though he lives in the same (apt?) building. How certain are we that Matthew Smith is Catherine the younger's father?

The closest I have seen is this marriage record for Dominick Nicholson and a Kathleen Brown. in 1922.

Dominick Nicholson
in the New York, New York, Marriage License Indexes, 1907-2018
Name: Dominick Nicholson
Gender: Male
Marriage License Date: 18 May 1922
Marriage License Place: Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA
Spouse: Kathleen Brown
License Number: 6590

There is no Dominick Nicholson married to a Smith in the New York record.

Then (C) Katherine was 17 year at the marrige.. The name is also written different. Can Kathleen and Dominick have devorst or Kathleen have died? It's unlike that transcription error have occured more than one time.May bee the only way to solve is to contact Eileen Marie Nicholson in Vt.

Also in the 1925 New York State Census and living at the same address 1322 Sterling Place is a Matheus Schmidt ? born in Norway and his wife Catherine born in Ireland. Ancestry has the spelling as Mathen but I think Matheus is probably more correct. Also his occupation is painter.

Mathen Schmidt
in the New York, State Census, 1925
Name: Mathen Schmidt
Birth Date: abt 1879
Birth Place: Norway
Age: 46
Gender: Male
Residence Place: Brooklyn, Kings
Relationship: Head
Color or Race: White
Number of Years in US: 23
Assembly District: 18
House Number: 1322
Line Number: 07
Page Number: 5
Household Members:
Name Age
Mathen Schmidt 46
Catherine Schmidt 36
Peter Devany 26
Thomas Sueenay 27

As a side note, it is likely that the Peter Devany listed above married Theresa sister of Dominick Nicholson.

In the 1930 Census Dominick and family are still at 1322 Sterling Place #108. On the same page but down the page slightly Mathew Smith and wife Catherine are listed as living at 1322 Sterling Place. #110.

Dominick Nicholson
in the 1930 United States Federal Census
Street address: Sterling Place
Ward of City: part of A D 18
Block: G
House Number: 1322
Dwelling Number: 22
Family Number: 108

Mathew Smith
in the 1930 United States Federal Census
Street address: Sterling Place
Ward of City: part of A D 18
Block: G
House Number: 1322
Dwelling Number: 22
Family Number: 110

And just above Dominick and family are the family of Peter Drevaney and wife Theresa sister of Dominick, living at 1320 Sterling Place. The immigration year for Theresa is 1923. For Dominick it is 1920

According to a Tree the parents are Peter Nicholson and Mary Hunt. Both them died in Ireland so likely that the children came over on their own..

Probably the arrival of Dominick in 1820

Name: Dominick Nicholson
Arrival Date: 9 Sep 1920
Birth Date: abt 1898
Birth Location: Ireland
Birth Location Other: sligo
Age: 22
Gender: Male

If Kathryn Smith's birthname is actually Brown, here are two candidates in the 1901 census:
