Hello! I'm searching for information about Oddvin Eikeland, born in Hægebostad, Vest-Agder, Norway 22nd of August 1923. I don't know when he left Norway to settle in USA, but he is on the passenger list with Oslofjord in 1955, travelling from Kristiansand to New York. That could have been a return after a visit in Norway. He probably died in Sacramento County, California in 1980. I also found some information in Norway about him married to Unni Henni Eikeland, but this is not confirmed in any way.
With hopeful regards
Arne Bråten

His address on that 1955 passenger list is 3055 15th Avenue Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In the SSDI his death is recorded as Dec 1980 and his SSN was issued in New York. The SS last benefit was paid to somplace in Rancho Cordova, Gold River or Nimbus in Sacramento county, California.

In the newspaper Fædrelandsvennen on 25 July 1951, either marriage or impending marriage is mentioned. Her name is Unni Henie Jensen of Kirkenes and Oddvin Eikeland tømmerman of Tingvatn.

A Tree on Ancestry.com has this person as his wife. I would not trust the death record date listed in the Tree based on other evidence. Or he was married twice.

DEATH ABT 1973 • Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA

Thank you both of you! I think the SS information is correct. But when it comes to if he was married, I'm not so sure. In Norway many people use MyHeritage.com. When someone post some information that is not true because they never looked into the existing sources, others just copy and after a while this becomes the truth. lyndal40 - about this family tree. Is it Oddvin or Odd Willy that is listed? I don't think this is the same person.

In two obituaries in seperate newspapers about his mother Karoline Eikeland in 1976, he is listed as Oddvin in one and Oddmund in the other. Of course this is only the OCR read which could differ from what was actually printed.

It would be a neat trick if it is his child since he died in 1980....

From the Tree

Oddvin Eikeland
1923–1980
BIRTH 22 AUG 1923 • Norway
DEATH DEC 1980 • New York, USA

Birth date is the same as you posted. Death location does not fit what we found.

The Tree may have cobbled together a person from New York named Odd? Eikeland with information they found on your Oddvin Eikeland and made a Tree, And thus having a child of Oddvin Eikeland and Unni Hennie Jensen married to a Evelyn Alequin daughter of this person. Or there may be some real connection to your guy but right now too complex to easily understand.

Victor Alequin
in the U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014
Name: Victor Alequin
Last Residence:
10302 Staten Island, Richmond, New York, Africa
Born: 10 Feb 1927
Died: 18 May 2011
State (Year) SSN issued: Puerto Rico (Before 1951)

Oviously I was not at all clear on what the relationship was. So from the Tree a son of Oddvin Eikeland and Unni Hennie Jensen married Evelyn Alequin.

It's not just the OCR; I have looked at the actual newspaper notices in Fædrelandsvennen on October 26 and 27 1976, and it says Oddmund in the first and Oddvin in the second. There were other survivors, and this is recent stuff; do you know if there is a family you may contact to settle the matter?
