Hi This is a pretty good canidate for your grandfather in the 1900 census http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1900/f01748.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=2136&fulle=true&spraak=n
Leikton Eriks. on the Lerbækken farm which is where his last name came from. His birth year here is 1897 but the info on the census isn't 100 % correct and the area is right.

Here is his emigrant record from Trondheim, 1914. It states that he has been visiting Fosnes since april 1913, so he has probably left Norway sometime before. But if he was leaving Norway working as a sailor you would not find him in any emigrant/passenger lists. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/EMITROND&variabel=0&postnr=164631&fulle=true&spraak=n

By the way. His destination in 1914 was "Henley, Sask." The ticket was prepaid in "Amerika" which suggests he had family or friends i Henley already.

The records would be in the kirkebøker - parish registers and are available from the LDS on microfilm. They have lots of locations.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

You can also check with The National Archives of Norway http://www.arkivverket.no/english/investigations.html
click on the sitemap to find the link to locations.

You might want to read some of the articles at the Ancestors from Norway site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na2.html
or http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/index.html
There is a lot here on how to research your ancestors

This is a reply from Norway. The Leirbekk family is growing in Norway, and most of them are still living in the Namsos area in the middle of Norway. There is also a farm on a small island outside Namsos carrying the familyname Leirbekk. In Norway there has been written a book which include the Leirbekk family in Norway an USA (Canada). I am probably your second cousin an live in Oslo Norway. I hope this information could help you a litle bit.
