Hello again folks.Continuing the search for my Norwegian grandfather,Edvard Martin Eriksen(1865-1930),i have his signed"Oath of Allegiance"in Warwick,Queensland dated 8/3/1888 The only ship arrival prior to that date is for a Martin Eriksen,on the RMS "Jumna",out of London, leaving 8/2/1887 and arriving in Brisbane on the 6/4/1887.The birthdate for him is given as 1869.I have tried unsuccessfully to find out if they are one and the same. The next record of Edvard,is in Sydney in1892.Can anyone tell me the way to go from here. Many thanks. Ross Erickson |

Hi
There is a Edvard Martin Eriksen born 19. august 1865 in Bergen. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/44/pp00000000090730
Do you know your grandfather's birthdate? Do you know the name of his children? (If he followed norwegian naming rules, his first son should be given the name of his father's father.) |

That is likely the Martin Eriksen who you have posted as arriving in 'Brisbane 6 April 1887.The passenger next to him on the Emigration from Norway list is a Kristian Jens age 20 also going to Australia.

The Martin Eriksen who left from Kristiania in January of 1887 is listed with residence Nęs (Nes) in Hedmark county in Eastern Norway.
I see little reason to doubt that your grandfather was the one born in Bergen in 1865. I have looked through one of the trees on Ancestry containing him, and there is a Public Service Lists for New South Wales 1858-1960 in which Edward Martin Erickson is listed with the date of birth Aug 19, 1865. There is also the death index, where his parents' first names are given as Edward and Elizabeth M, matching the parents at the Bergen baptism.
There are photos of Edward sr. and Elizabeth on Geni. Is there a family resemblance with the photo of Martin jr. on Ancestry?
His brother Peter Waage settled down as a minister in Southern Norway and had several children, so there should be ample opportunity to have your relation confirmed genetically if you wish.
His brother was apparently well liked by his parishioners, and I found a longish piece about him here, unfortunately written in dialect, so you may not easily make sense of it through Google Translate. |

Thankyou al for your help.Yes,Vivi, that is the correct birthdate for my grandfather, but he didn,t follow the naming custom.According to my searches, his father,s father was Rasmus Christian, but Edvard Martin named his only son Arthur Edward Charles(1900-1988).He also had 2 daughters,Regina Muriel (1896-1979),and Dorothy Sunniva(1898-1921).Yes Lyndal, that is the record i have, and i think it probably my grandfather, except for the wrong birthdate.Also.after Edvard,s arrival in Brisbane, his name changed to Edward Martin Erickson. And Tor,there is family resemblance between edvard and edvard martin. The Martin Eriksen sailed on a ship called"Cameo"Thanks for the piece about his brother Peter.I will try to decipher it. I,m very grateful to you all. ross |
