Hi there,
I am attempting to trace our roots and hopefully even find possible family photos if they exist. I have done as much of our family tree on ancestry.ca as I can without upping my subscription. The one line of our family that I seem to run out quickly is my great great grandfather Louis Larson that we believe (was formerly of the Østby family/Farmstead?) who immigrated from Norway around 1893 I believe and ended up residing in Minnesota or Wisconsin Mattsson Østby is the only lead I have for his father The Other dates I have: Possible birthdate August 4 1867 Bergen Hordaland Norway Possible death date July 6 1941 Thief River Falls, Pennington Minnesota Marriage date was August 12, 1893 in Grand Forks North Dakota
I do know that surnames and given names were changed when moving to America for a lot of people so I’m hoping the Østby name helps.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Shayla

Tri County Forum pub Thief River Falls Minn 10 July 1941 has an obituary for Louis Larson on page 4 col 6 " Last Rites Held Today for Goodridge Man"
It's searchable at the Old Fulton history site.
Roughly the obit says Louis was born 4 August 1867 in Hedahlen Norway and came to Fillmore county [Minnesota?] in 1885, spent two years on the west coast and came to Grand Forks in 1890 and married Emily Bergstrom there three years later. He homesteaded 12 miles north of this city [Thief River Falls?] in 1898. He is survived by son Leonard of Goodridge, daughters Mrs. Charles Lagerstadt and Mrs. Herman Olson both of Chicago, Mrs. Albert Proath of Piny, Canada and a brother named Gulbrand and sister Karen Olemh in Norway and 13 grandchildren. His wife, 2 brothers and 4 sisters have preceded him in death.

I think that the Østby farm you are referring to is in Lunner Parish, Oppland, Norway. Lunner Parish was a part of Jevnaker Parish, Oppland until 1906. In the Family Search page for Lunner you will find Østby under the farm names. Most of the data is found by searching either Jevnaker or Lunner Parish.

This is likely Gerterud Poulsdatter living on Østby farm in the 1801 Census. She is listed as Guertru Paalsdatter and was born about 1775. Father is Paul Olsen and mother is Anne Chrestoffersdatter

Not a lot of candidates for the husband of Gertrud. This is the only one I found. In the 1801 he is Poul Larsen living Kalsiø farm and is married. However his wife Kersti Gulbrandsdatter is 72 so it is possible that she died and Poul Larsen married Gerterud before the birth of their son Lars in 1814.

Lyndal40 (Anton) -- I think you are exactly right in your thinking above. I'm left wondering where the family came up with "Hedahlen" as his place of origin as published in his obituary. But then I must remember in the small town mid-west newspaper that published my own great-grandfather's obituary that he was from "Javensnakers", Yes, it was actually Jevnaker. Gran and Jevnaker, including Lunner are all part of the region which has also been known as Hadeland and that must be what was being attempted with "Hedahlen". While there exists no bygdebok for the Gran and Jevnaker (Hadeland) areas the parish records are for the most part quite usable, reasonably accessible and there is an active group online interested in learning about emigrants from the area - Hadeland Lag of America. https://www.hadelandlag.org/ |

Thanks Hopkins. This record that I just dug up out of the ELCA records might shed some light on what the location really is.
Here is a record form the ELCA from Thief River Falls when the family was living there. This record is from 1912.
Ester Adelia Larson in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1781-1969 Name: Ester Adelia Larson Record Type: Confirmation Birth Place: Grand Forks North Dakota, USA Confirmation Date: 25 Aug 1912 Father: Louis Larson Mother: Amelia Larson Church Name: Bethlehem Church Location: Thief River Falls, Minnesota
At about the same time (no date on the page ) is this record for the members of the congregation.

Here the location in Norway looks more like Hadeland. |

This passage from Wikipedia seems to confirm that the area of Norway that Lars Larsen aka Louis Larson was from was Jevnaker/Lunner.
"Hadeland [1] is a traditional district in the south-eastern part of Norway. It is centered on the southern part of Randsfjorden in Innlandet (formerly Oppland) and Viken (formerly Buskerud),[2] and consists of the municipalities Gran in Innlandet County and Jevnaker and Lunner in Viken County. "
However the Wikipedia article needs to make it clearer that Jevnaker and Lunner were not part of Buskerud but part of Oppland.
And I wonder are the old parishes of Jevnaker and Lunner really now included in Viken?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadeland
It also gives us a another birth date and likely from a time when Louis Larson was still alive. |

Hadeland plain as day!! I couldn't be happier.
Lutheran ministers so often so good about keeping such notes! I recommend such research often even if it means a trip to the old church building at a great distance and getting the permission of the current church council. Been there - done that and it was wonderful! Luckily the old records there were kept entirely in Norwegian and I had some practice already with births/baptisms etc. |

Wow!!! Thank you so much for all of this. I did not expect such wonderful helpful responses but I am so appreciative of them. I will look into this all and it looks like I may be getting the answers I was hoping. So excited to learn what I can!
