My great grandfather, Amandus Sally Karlsen, was born in Barbu parish, Arendal on 10/14/1902. (Digitalarkivet: Parish register No. A5, dp pg. 45) His parents are Karl Karlsen (gift) who was apparently married to another woman and Amalie Berglund. I translated the comment to “Miss Tilla Andersen formerly Berglund, mother’s sister notified me of child 3/14/1903, the father ascribed” Others mentioned are Amalie’s sister and brother-in-law and Oskar Karlsen and Olevine Aanonsen presumably Karl’s brother and sister-in-law. I found Oskar and Olevine but I am unable to find anything on Karl, my family’s namesake. Can someone please help solve this? |

In the baptism record for Amandus Sally two of the fadder are listed as from Strømmen which is a parish in Vestfold but also a farm in Aust-Agder.

Oskar Karlsen and Olevine Aanansen’s marriage record shows a town in Sweden that Oskar and Karl may be from But I can’t decipher it. https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/3419/22903/25
The record also shows that Oskar and Karl’s dad may be Karl Trost. Thank you everybody for your help. |

The Norwegian Census posted above of Oscar Carlsen from Sweden from the 1900 and 1910 are likely of your Oscar Carlsen. The 1910 Census shows Oscar with wife Olevine from Øyestad.

Could it be Huud in Tanum? Tanum is an area on the Swedish west coast not very far from the Norwegian border, and I find some old references to a locality there called Huud. I don't find it on modern maps, though. |

quote: One of the possible Oskars is from Bohusland and Tanum is listed as in Goteborg and Bohus.
Even more confusing than Norwegian fylke and traditional districts like Gudbrandsdalen
Bohuslän is a province
The provinces of Sweden (Swedish: Sveriges landskap) are historical, geographical and cultural regions. Sweden has 25 provinces and they have no administrative function, but remain historical legacies and the means of cultural identification. Dialects and folklore rather follows the provincial borders than the borders of the counties.
Gothenburg and Bohus was a county that is now part of Västra Götaland County.
The counties of Sweden (Swedish: Sveriges län) are the top-level geographic subdivisions of Sweden. Sweden is today divided into 21 counties; however, the numbers of counties has varied over time, due to territorial gains/losses and to divisions and/or mergers of existing counties
So maybe being from Bohuslän and from Gothenburg and Bohus is the same thing?

And the third brother is from Wæstergotland
And Oscar and Axel seem to work as Kjører ved bageriforretning,

Ok, I now have: Oskar Karlsen "Karlsson Trost" from his marriage https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/3419/22903/25 line 28 b. Hud i Tanum, Västra Götaland, Sverige probably on Trost farm. I checked birth records for his kids Tyra, Dagny, and Frits, but Karl doesn't appear in any of them. Now I need to find Karl Karlsen "Karlsson Trost" who probably got married in one of the Arendal parishes before 1903. Thanks for the help with Hud i Tanum. |

In a sordid twist, I just found a birth record for Olanda Adolfa https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/5088/75081/209 Record shows the mother as unmarried Amalie Severine Berglund and father as married Ole Kristiansen from Risor. Also mentions Mathilde Berglund, Amalie's sister Emma Karlsen, unknown Karl Karlsen, my great great grandfather and father of Amalie's other kid, Amandus
It looks like Olanda Adolfa is the half sister of my great grandfather that I never knew about and at least the second time my great great grandmother had a child out of wedlock. |
