I am writing memories of Nels Meland who lived with my family all the years I was in school. Of course, this was over 50 years ago! His name was Nels Meland, son of Nils Anderson Meland and Kristi Brekke Meland (b. July 13, 1843, d. November 1, 1899 in Faribault Co., Minnesota). Nils, the father, was born September 8, 1848 at Stryn, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, immigrated to America in 1881 and died in Faribault Co., Minnesota, on November 22, 1883. Nels's mother died in 1899 and Nels and his sister went to live with a "cousin", John K. Meland. I have found that John K. Meland's father was Knut (Knud) from Stryn, Sogn og Fjordane. Could you find the name of Nils Anderson Meland's father so I can understand the relationship between John K. Meland (who I knew also) and Nils Anderson Meland. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Many Thanks!

This is probably him in the 1865 Census on the Meland farm. He is listed as a foster child although I do not know why, as his parents Anders Ericksen and Anne Johnsdatter are listed above him and what would appear to be two siblings.

So looks like

Anders Eriksen Mæland had a son

Knud Andersen born 1841 and married to Eli Larsdatter. They had a son

John Knudsen Meland born in 1868.

Anders Eriksen Mæland also had a second son

Nils Andersen Meland born in 1848

Nils had a son Niels Meland born in 1899.

John Knudsen Meland is a first cousin of Niels Meland

Just a heads up. There is another Knud Andersen born Jan 9, 1841. He is Nr. 6, on the same page as your Knud Andersen Nr. 1. The farm associated with him is Bødal. His parents are Anders Knudsen and Siri Larsdatter. He shows up a lot in the Digitalarkvet search pages for Styrn. And had me a little confused for awhile.

Thank you all so much! Would it be possible to find the parents and siblings of Christi Brekke? We had many Brekke's in our area. I feel that life was very difficult for the Nils Anderson Meland family. Apparently they immigrated in 1881, a daughter, Christina, was born that year. Nels was born Dec. 2, 1883, shortly after his father died. Another question is: There was a daughter born in 1871 named Brita Absalomsdtr. It lists her birth place as Trondheim. Nels was very close to this sister Brita. She and her husband, George Mork, settled in Saskatchewan, Canada, around 1916. Again, many thanks!
