Mary Persky asked for Information on Tarald Taraldsen (1892-1946) in a post some months ago. I have been in contact with her as Tarald was my grandmother´s youngest brother.

However, my grandmother has written in her memoirs that six of her brothers and sisters were in the US around 1910.

Her sister Terese/Teresie Jørgensen (1886-1977) is well known to me, but some of the brothers I have lost track of, despite searches in censuses etc.

I know Hans Taraldsen (born July 11, 1877) and brother Andreas ( born April 25, 1888) sailed from Kristiansand November 15 1907 (Thingvalla). I have a picture of Andreas hunting in Alaska.

I wonder whether Aanon Emil (born June 16, 1881) might have left after his wife and baby died in 1909. I have no proof of this, though.

Then the sixth might be Berte Olsen (born July 2, 1884), wife of Otto M Olsen (1884) or Tomine ( born February 7, 1876, wife of Knut Knutsen (1871)

My grandmother wrote that they went to Texas and worked in the oil industry. Tarald lived in Orange, Texas so this makes perfect sense to me.

I would appreciate any help!

Best wishes from

In 1910 a Andreas and Aanon Taraldsen arrived in New York. Last address was Risør.

I see in the 1891 Census there is a Aanon Emil Taraldsen. I wonder if this Aanon could be the same person.

Name: Aanon Emil Taraldsen
Gender: Mann (Male)
Relation to Head: Søn (Son)
Birth Date: 1881
Residence Place: Søndeled, Søndeled, Aust-Agder, Norge (Norway)

Aanon Taraldsen
in the New York, Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957

Last Permanent Address: Norway
Other Last Permanent Address: Rieor

Andreas lists Galveston Texas as a place where he has been, Aanon has not been to America before. Destination is a Peter Knutsen ? Texas.

Based on the 1891 Census, I would guess that Peder and Aanon from the ship in Virginai in 1914 are the Peder and Aanon found in the 1891 Norwegian Census. Trying to find these sailors in an American Census is a tough job. Almost easier to find them in the Norwegian Census listed as living in America or even England? As was Aanon for the 1900 Norwegian Census.

Aanon Taraldsen
in the 1900 Norway Census
Name: Aanon Taraldsen

Line Number: 9
Household Members:

Here is a death cert for an Emile Hanson born June 1882 Norway who died in Jefferson county, Texas in 1915. His parents are Jarold / Tarold Hanson and Anne Olson:

Interesting Jackie. The document gives his father's name as Jarold (Or Tarald?) Hansen and mother as Anne Olsen. Person filling out the form is A Hansen Saratoga, Texas.

Must be the same guy as the death record posted above in Digitalarkivet

Perhaps the death record is a little wrong and the parents names are Tarald Olsen and Anna Hansdatter. Then it would fit it the parents in the 1891 Census

Aanon Emil Olsen was born Jun of 1881 tho not 1882.

Thanks a lot! I am really overwhelmed by your quick and accurate responses!

They were indeed sailors;

Hans: https://www.sjohistorie.no/no/sjofolk/53502/

Aanon: https://www.sjohistorie.no/no/sjofolk/53505/ (In the 1900-census it is recorded that he probably is in England)

Peder: https://www.sjohistorie.no/no/sjofolk/53507/ He was married to Jenny Kristine Jensen in 1906 and died in Norway May 8th 1918.

Andreas did not work at sea. as far as I can see, at least not in Norway.

I suppose the death recorded here is Aanon: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/64348/233
He died of appendicitis. Now I need to track down his second wife...

Best wishes from

The ladies are a little harder to find. Tell us more information on them if you know it. When did they get married. Norway or America? When did they leave Norway? etc.

I do not know whether they actually emigrated, but I have lost sight of them in Norway. I hope I can get track of them again when the 1920-census is released in Norway.

Anne Tomine Taraldsdatter was born in Sætra, Søndeled, February 7, 1876. She was married to Knud Knudsen, born April 17, 1871 in Vegårdshei. He belonged to the religious sect "Guds menighet". I find them in the 1900-census (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/rural-residence/bf01037192000431), but not in 1910.

The other sister was called Berte and was born July 2, 1884. She was first married to Petter Jørgen Pettersen in 1903, but he died outside New Zealand (sailor). July 6th 1913 she marries Otto M. Olsen born December 13, 1884 from Grue. She lived her last years in Evje, Norway, according to my grandmother, but I can´t find any evidence...
