Bård Samuelsen Foss, b. July 10, 1864, in Suldal, Rogaland
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/1694/11206/48
Parents: Samuel Olsen (1819-92) and Barbro Bårdsdotter (1825-69)

is said to have emigrated in 1882, but disappeared without a trace (unsure if he emigrated at all). No reliable traces, not even confirmation of his emigration. A sister, Brønla Foss, b. 1847, lived in North Dakota, married to Jacob Lee (Lie) from Suldal. Another sister, Anna, b. 1851, married 1. Nils Helganes, 2. Lars Østerhus in Minnesota. Anna returned to Norway as a widow in 1911, no children. She received a couple of letters from America from a Bill Samson, which she returned unopened. Later she thought these might be from her brother. The family asked the Salvation Army to try to find Bård, without results. A Bird S. Foss turns up in Alaska, b. 1858, married to Christina Foss, b. 1858, but there are several things that don't add up here, among others the birth year, which is 6 years earlier. In any case, this is the closest we have gotten. We surely would appreciate if anyone can dig up some info, even if it regards this 'Bird'.
Thank you - Tusen takk - and God Jul!

There is a family tree at Ancestry that identifies the son Harold Foss' father as this:
Bård Samuelsson Fosstveit
and Harold's name as: Halfton "Harold" Sophus Foss

Here is the family in the 1885 Dakota Territorial census:
07-005-18 Fastveit, Barney 27 Farmer Norway Walsh
07-005-19 Fastveit, Christina 27 Norway Walsh
07-005-20 Fastveit, Samuel 3 Dakota Walsh

In the ELCA records there is a baptism of a boy named Samuel born to parents named Baard S and Christina Fostvedt in 1881 in a congregation Ancestry calls Golber Valler but which is actually called Golden Valley Lutheran.

Is your Baard's farm Fosstveit?

Sorry it looks like Bird S Foss is out. Here is his marriage:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/327/pv00000007042977

I'm not sure if I sign on to this Baard's father being named Samuel Danielsen. It is so tightly written it could almost be Baardsen also. But not much help either way since the hope was it was an error and the name actually read Olsen but it really doesn't. The age, as noted by poster before, is also a bit of problem. If this were Baard Samuelsen Foss he would be only 15 and only just confirmed, very wet behind the ears for a 22 year old woman.

Here the couple is in 1875 on Svandal in Sand in Sauda:

Transcription of this Baar's birth / baptism in Sand:

Anna Samuelson, widow married Lars Larsen Østerhus on 31 Dec 1889 in Buxton, Dakota at the Ny Stavanger Lutheran church (which later became part of the Buxton Lutheran church).

Baar in the 1865 census of Suldal:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038211000046

Baar is alive in the 1875 census of Suldal:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052252000048

His father Samuel Olsen and his 2nd wife and 3 of their children in 1891, Baar is not with them:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052940000448

Baar is still alive in 1878 when he is confirmed #20:
SAST, Suldal sokneprestkontor, IV/L0011: Parish register (official) no. A 11, 1878-1900, p. 117
Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070219640316

There is a gap in the outmigrants list of Suldal between 1878-1885, see left page here:
SAST, Suldal sokneprestkontor, IV/L0011: Parish register (official) no. A 11, 1878-1900, p. 276
Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070219640443

Perhaps one of the Norwegian readers can tell what the note means....Please?

Perhaps Ole Samuelsen and Baard Samuelsen became sailors? There is a book in the National Library site which appears to be about sailors from Suldal, I can't access it:
Tittel
Sjøormen i Suldalsvatnet : dramatikk frå Suldal
Forfatter
Lauritzen, Merethe | Bråtveit, Ola
Publisert
Merethe Lauritzen og Ola Bråtveit, 2019

Probably the brother Ole Samuelson's (d.e.) confirmation in 1874 #15:
SAST, Suldal sokneprestkontor, IV/L0010: Parish register (official) no. A 10, 1869-1878, p. 105
Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070219640097

Probable death of Ole Samuelsen on Foss in 1877 # 31:
SAST, Suldal sokneprestkontor, IV/L0010: Parish register (official) no. A 10, 1869-1878, p. 169
Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070219640154

If there are no additional as yet unaccounted for children of Samuel Olsen, then Baard has to be the 3rd child in America.

There is a family tree in Ancestry which gives William's place of origin as Orkdal, Trondelag, Norway, so a short brief possibility.

William S Norwick's death certificate gives his birth date as 17 July 1865, so we have dueling records anyway.

In this case there are two persons Baard Samuelsen Foss. The missing Baard was born in 1864 at the farm FOSS in Suldal. Most of these posts concern the other Baard Samuelson Foss, born 1857 at the farm Fosstveit in Sauda, who picked the reduced and simplified form Foss instead of Fosstveit. The one from Sauda is the person ending up in Alaska, and judging from the info in this string, so far nothing indicates that we have gotten closer to the Suldal person in question. The good thing is though, that we can overlook the Sauda Baard completely, who for some time I figured had to be the missing one. But as I mentioned starting the thread, we are not a hundred % sure that he actually left the country. After quite many years search I feel it is about time to leave the mystery as it is - a mystery. Thank you, Tusen takk, to those involved.
