Again, amazing amount of information. Nice to work with names like Gyri, Herborg, Gjermund - instead of all the Ole Olsons.

Herborg came first in the family 1869. Married Mikkel Axness in USA about 1870. First son Olav born 1871.

After Herborg, her mother Gyri, half-brother Tosten, and possibly half-sister Inger came in 1875.

On 1880 census for Mikkel & Herborg Axness - these 3 are living with them - Julia Moe 18, Thorsten Moe 20, John Moe 21.
(Possibly Julia married Martin Bentsen in 1883.)

Interesting that Gyri is listed as Guri Axness on FaG in same cemetery with Herborg and family. Correction to Guri Mo, as in the church books.

Thanks again for great info and documentation.
~~Kay

The other Mikkel Olsen along with his mother Ingejerd Arnesdatter can be found on the farm Birkeland øvre in the 1865 Census.

Herborg came first in the family 1869. Must have met Mikkel Axness in USA and married about 1870. First son Olav born 1871. Some say Mikkel Axness was from Snasa, NT.

No he was from Axnæs farm in Kvam, Hordaland. From the same fylke Hordaland and likely the very same area as his wife Herborg.

Since she came to America in 1869 and they were married in 1870, I would say that it is very likely that they new one another in Noway.

In the 1865 Norwegian Census, Herborg was living on Aksnæs nedre.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038236000110

And in the 1865 Norwegian Census, Mikkel was living on Aksnæs øvre.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038236000100

I would venture a guess that the two farms are either next to one another or very close to one another.

In this listing of the farms from the 1865 Census it looks like the farm Gere may be located between the farms.

You are in agreement with Ættarbok for Kvam, vol 1, Vikøy sogn, by L H Torpe, 1959. It gives the following children for Olav Olavson Aksnes (1803-1869) and Brita Bertilsdt Skeie (1808-1889) at Øvre Aksnes:

- Olav (1829-1892)
- Anna (1831 - ) She stayed with her mother as long as she lived, and cared for her.
- Bertil (1834 - ) To America in 1856.
- Sjur (1836-1853)
- Lars (1841 - ) Shoemaker. To Amerika (Hardangerdalen) , where he married Kristi Kristoffersdt Øystese
- Mikjell (1844 - ) To America in 1868, where he married Herborg Nilsdt Mo. (And here there is a reference to the piece about Mo farm in the same volume.)
- Simon (1849 - 1938)

Thanks for additional info on Julia Moe Bensen with correction on birth year.

SJETNE is it. Found Hans and Gurine in North Immanuel Cem, Norwegian Grove - same cemetery as Axnesses.

Gurine 18 Feb 1833 - 23 July 1901 FaG# 29392954
Hans 18 March 1839-3 June 1893 FaG# 29392953
Birth years seem off.

Any ideas on the inscription on their grave markers. Now I know the top part about the dust. But what about the bottoms?

Thank you in advance, Kay
