Nice information about Sugar Creek church - that book is huge - over 1100 pages.
You are right - Sophie age 13 could be a younger sister to Gunhild (based on mother's age of 55 in 1880, it would be possible)
1870 Census taker had some trouble with Norwegian names - Gunhild is called Nelier, and same for her mother Christi/ Kirsten ( or could that be a 2nd marriage for her father Niels Jensen ( Nelson Johnson).
On 1880 Census, wife of Nelson Johnson 67 is called Ann age 65. |

There is a dirty little secret about the 1850-1860-1870 censuses and their creation that makes for strange renditions of things. The census taker made one copy. That copy was deposited at the county courthouse and that copy was copied (by hand) and the copy was sent to the state. Once there that copy was copied again and that copy was sent to Washington. The microfilming was undertaken on the multi-generational Federal copy because most counties and states didn't keep their copies. Then the microfilming was digitized. It's a colossal game of "Telephone" so errors were widespread. |

Shocked that these facts are not widely known. For sure, gives a different outlook not to depend on these census years.
At Sugar Creek - trying to make out the Jacobsons (some whom are Otterholts). Looks like 2 Ole Jacobsons with sons names Jacob. What about Isaac Jacobson (2nd husband of Maren Limie - widow of Nils Otterholt). Isaac parents Jacob Jacobson 1829-1864 + Maren 1833-1924. Who is Ole Oterholt 1813-1889?
In 1859, our Jacob Olson born 1831 came over with his father Ole Jacobson born 1806.
Are these people connected or not?
Thanks much for all the valuable information. ~~Kay |

As usual, a lot of good information to digest. Ole Jacobson was a busy guy - but emigrates without any wife, but with his son Jacob.
Marine Hansine Hansdtr Limie 1866-1945 - logical that her husband's family (Nils Otterholt 1862-1902) and her father (Hans Haraldson Limie 1838-1867) both originate in Gjerpen. |

Marrying who you might be familiar with already is a good strategy!
Are you familiar with the series Norwegian Immigrants to the United States, A Biographical Directory by Gerhard Naeseth?
Volume 3 1847-1848 page 22 has identified #287 Jacob Jacobsen Brandsæter (as Jacob Thosseg 18) b. 10 June 1829 d 1861 as arriving on the Jupiter in Boston Massachusetts 9 Aug 1847, together with his father Jacob Torstensen (as Jacob Thosseg 55) and his mother Maren (as Marie Thosseg, 49,) brothers Torsten Jacobsen (as Dorste Thosseg) and Ole Jacobsen (as Ole Thosseg) Unfortunately, there is no further on family of Jacob Jacobsen but sources given for the information are the Gjerpen parish records, Sugar Creek Lutheran Cemetery, 1850, 1860 censuses of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Century Farm Records, Walworth County vital records. |

Your Westermoe family also came from Gjerpen, as you most likely know, and they are in Volume 2 page 25 as arriving on the Salvator arriving New York 6 July 1844 leaving from Porgrunn. The Maren Turine who died in 1866 is the family's second daughter with that name. She was born in US, but the book carries no additional family information concerning her.
Sources listed for the Westermoe family include Gjerpen parish registers, Holden Lutheran Cemetery, 1850 Wisconsin census, 1860 Minnesota census and Hitterdalsboken, page 441 |

Your family Niels Jensen and Gunhild Olsdatter together with daughters Gunhild Maria, Kirsten, Maren and son Ole left Gjerpen in 1848. They are included in the book in Volume 3 on page 214, but their ship is not identified. They are carrying the farm name Oterholt and what it says about Gunhild Maria is that she married Jacob Olson Oterholt b 1832-1914 and their children are listed as they appear in the various censuses and nothing further about them. Sources for this family include Gjerpen parish registers, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 Wisconsin censues, Mrs. Allan Johnson, Terje Christensen.
Also on the page 22 of Volume 3 on the Jupiter in 1847 are found Lars Jensen Teigen (brother of Niels Jensen above) his wife Maria Jacobsdatter (daughter of Jacob Torstenson in the other post), his mother Margith Pedersdatter, his daughter Maren (and daughter Sara b 1846? is listed but is not found on the passenger list). Sources for the information on this family include the Gjerpen parish records, Sugar Creek Lutheran Cemetery; 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 Wisconsin censuses; Mrs. Allan Johnson and Hollis V. Johnson. |

I was going to say - Jackie is an encyclopedia of knowledge on these subjects. But on further thought, it is not comparable. In an encyclopedia, a person must look up the desired facts. Here, you provide knowledge a person didn't even know was available hence could not even begin to look up. Thank you! |

Gunhild Maria Nielsdtr 1838 - her mother Kirsten Gudbiorsndtr. must have died soon after Gunhild was born.
2nd marriage for Nelson Jensen/Johnson in 1841 to a Gunhild explains why 1870 Census has same name "Nelier" for his wife Gunhild and his daughter Gunhild.
On 1880 Census, wife of Nelson Johnson 67 is called Ann age 65. |

So much good information on the Otterholt side.
But back to my original person Hans Haraldsen Limie. When he emigrated in 1857, looks like no family with him. So perhaps his parents stayed in Norway- Harald Andersen and Maren Hansdattter?
Found a Harald Andersson who died in Gjerpen 10 Feb 1883 |

According to the story in the Norwegian Immigrants book regards Niels Jensen says he married a third time in 1861 to Anne Larsdatter.

With all this info - we have made unexpected connections between totally different sides of the family..
Great Limie info! Interesting - didn't see the mother's names on the baptism transcriptions.
We are in a sort of panic - knowing that this great resource may disappear. For future use - if you would have time - could you share the best links you use to search for these records?
Tusen takk! Kay |
