Hans Sjurson Burtness aka Hans Severson, born in Hafslo May 15, 1818 married in Hafslo June 23, 1852 to Kirsti Christensdotter Aasen aka Christine, born in Hafslo June 10, 1824. They emigrated in 1855 and settled on a farm in Dunn township near McFarland, Dane Co., WI where Hans died Nov. 12, 1878. Christine as a widow changed her last to HANSON and died Aug. 11, 1912.
Then where the challenge starts, their children. There were totally 10 of them, who all seem to have taken the last name HANSON after the father died in 1878, but not to make the family situation more complicated than necessary, I have in the following left out the ones who are known to have died young and single, most of them from consumption in the late 10's or early 20's.
According to the 1900 and 1910 census Christine only had THREE of her totally ten children still alive. One of them was:
* Johan aka John Hanson, born in Dane Co., WI Sep. 20, 1858, took over the home farm near McFarland, WI, but died in Madison, WI Apr. 3, 1938. He never married, and his obituary tells us he was survived by a cousin, Mrs. Andrew Werken in Madison, WI and a niece (not named) in Chicago, IL
For the other two children, and the father or mother of the niece in Chicago, IL we have these alternatives:
* Elizabeth (Severson) Hanson, born in Hafslo Jan. 8, 1854, was confirmed in McFarland, WI in 1869 and may be identical to a servant named Betsey Severson in Stoughton, WI in 1870 (before the family name changed to Hanson)!? One Elizabeth Hanson, aged 36, was married in Chicago, IL Apr. 7, 1888 to Benedig Carstenson, aged 48, but maybe that's the one who died in Chicago, IL May 6, 1889, born in Norway and aged 37?
* Christopher (Severson) Hanson, born in Dane Co., WI Jan. 21, 1857, was confirmed in McFarland in 1872, later destiny so far unknown
* Betsy Christine aka Bettie Hanson, born in Dane Co., WI Mar. 15, 1861, moved to Chicago, IL and married there (Bethania Lutheran) on May 5, 1883 to William B. BROWN, born in Sweden about 1855. William was a mail carrier and later a saloon keeper residing 1885/1888 on 117 Sedgwick in Chicago, IL. What later became of this couple, I have not been able to figure out... There was a widowed laborer W. B. Brown, born in Sweden 1857, who died in Chicago, IL Feb. 12, 1902 and was buried at «Policlinic», but there are other William Browns in other cities who would «match» as well...
All emigration research has it's challenges, and I appreciate very very much any suggestions in regard to these three Hanson-siblings!
Not finding any Benedig or Benedik Carstensen, but this fellow does pop up.
Nils Bendix Carstenson in the U.S., Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992 (Indexed in World Archives Project) Name: Nils Bendix Carstenson [N B Carstenson] Birth Place: Denmark Court District: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa Date of Action: 28 Oct 1884

So Kirsti Christiansdatter who was married to Hans Sjurson Burtness is the sister of
Lucris Christiansdattr who was the mother of Ida Hillestad

Thank you very much for several interesting messages!
As far as Christopher Hanson in Marinette Co., WI is concerned, I personally doubt there can be a connection with «our» Hanson family. There seems to be Hans Chris Hanson in Marinette Co., WI who is also a printer about the same age as «our» Christopher, so..., I don't know! The other guy came from Door Co., WI
The Hillestad lineage of this family has been pretty well completed, so no need to worry about that branch. They mostly stayed in Wisconsin. Lucris and Kirsti were in fact sisters!
As far as William B. Brown is concerned, I suppose he may well be recorded in the St. Ansgarius Swedish congregation. Maybe he was confirmed there? But I cannot recall having seen any confirmation records, and the marriage record was in a Norwegian church!
Now to Elizabeth Hanson Carstensen. I sent for, and have received, copies of the original records for her marriage and death, but they don't have much to add:
Elizabeth Carstensen 37 years old white femaie, married, housewife born in NORWAY died of heart disease 614 West Ohio street May 6, 1889
No burial site or husband's name given
They were married by Rev. A. S. Nielsen of the Danish Lutheran Trinity church in Chicago, IL Apr. 7, 1888
I guess this still qualifies Elizabeth as a «candidate» to «our» Elizabeth! Could she and Bendik have had a child?
Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter!
Does anyone know of church records from the Trinity Danish Lutheran church? It was founded in 1872 and closed in 1972 - maybe merged with some other church?
"Original records Original records are located at the ELCA Region 5 Archive in Dubuque, Iowa. The ELCA Archives has congregational histories and other materials relating to Trinity."
From the Chicago City Directory for 1887 there is one Carstenson and a near Carstenson as Carsterson: Cartstenson, Bentick tailor boards 624 W Indiana Carsterson, Bender lab. h. 1020 N California av.
Hansen Elizabeth D Miss h. 895 Shober No Elizabeth Hanson No Elizabeth Severson
Thank you very much for several interesting and challenging messages about this family!
I must admit I am not too sure where next to look for information. I imagine that Danish Trinity Lutheran church might have something to offer, but how to get it from Dubuque, IA? I have a good friend who works at the ELCA in Chicago, IL, so maybe I should ask him about that?
Apart from that I find quite intreaguing what you write about

Chicago Daily News Wednesday 23 Jan 1889 page 3 col 1 reported:
"Scarlet fever cases were reported ...117 Sedgwick....."

Does this article give any names of the victims? We know the one sister Bettie lived there, and a brother Andrew Hanson died there single on Apr. 21, 1888, but he died from TB... But for all we know Bettie and William Brown may be mentioned, or possible children of theirs?
