Here is another case of family "lore" and nothing to substantiate it. In my Mathiesen family I have tried for many years to find the records with dates of death for my great-grandmother Anna Marie Mathiesen (born Knudsen), and her daughter, Borgny Marie Knudsen. In the Bragernes churchbook, 25 Dec 1876, I found the birth record for Anna Marie Knudsen (daughter of Svend Knudsen & Wilhelmine Carlson). Her death had to have been between 1919-1924. I say this because her husband, Ludvig Hagbart Mathiesen, filed his Declaration of Intention in 1919, listing her as his wife, living in Norway. In 1924 on his Petition for Naturalization, he is listed as a widower. As for her daughter, Borgny, I always heard she died in 1938, on a ship sailing between New York & Norway; I also heard she had TB. She was born in Holmestrand, Norway, on 19 Dec 1908. On 22 Apr 1929, I find her on a passenger list in New York, arriving from Oslo, Norway. I also find her in the 1930 US Census in New York, living with her father, but he is alone in the 1940 Census. I have searched both NY records & the DigitalArkivet records, without any luck.
I am hoping someone out there might have some other ideas/luck in turning something up for these two. They family should be in Holmestrand, Norway. Perhaps, someone can find obituaries & death records, because I unfortunately can't. This is a HUGE brick wall, and missing part of my close family history. Thanks for any assistance. |

Jan Peter,
You're amazing! So many years searching for answers, without any luck, and here you dig this up. It certainly proves, sometimes it's all about knowing where to hunt & having the access. I appreciate having this part of my "brick wall," knocked down. Thank you very much for this tidbit of information on my grandmother's younger sister. |

Jan Peter,
I forgot to ask you if you know where I might find the link to the passenger manifest for this ship's sailing? If it is digitalized I might find some other bits of information . The only lists I can seem to access are sailings going to the USA, no matter I put in queries for New York to Bergen. |

Ancestry.com claims to have a database entitled "U.S., Departing Passenger and Crew Lists, 1914-1966". You might try that.
They further state that their source for the information in that database is the US National Archives and Records Administration. |

Thanks, I had looked at Ancestry, but double checked. No such luck, it, too is basically ships arriving in NY, and certainly nothing for the ship's list I want. Isn't that the way it too often goes?! |

I have a friend who is a subscriber to Ancestry and I asked if she would check and see if there actually was a database there for "U.S., Departing Passenger and Crew Lists, 1914-1966". Yes, there is and it is indeed OUTGOING ships and airplanes - not those arriving. She didn't feel that it was an all inclusive list though and said it seemed to capture multiple females named Borgny through those years, none noted by her in 1930. She had little time for this favor and was rushed.
If you are signed in at Ancestry try opening another window and do a Google (or other good search engine) for "U.S., Departing Passenger and Crew Lists" My friend said that took her immediately to that specific database on Ancestry. Good luck.
