Unfortunately I have only her records and that is what she recorded. I wish I could ask her. My hope was/is that experienced eyes might see something in the registers that would lead in the right direction. Here's a first child - Ole - any clues there ? https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061114010298 6th on left. |

This looks like the same couple in the 1801 census, with Hans aged 40. |

In the 1801 census, the oldest son and daughter of Hans and Siri are named Ole and Berte. This suggests that Hans' mother may also have had the name Berte. Interestingly, if I search for Hans Olsen Leangen at Geni, a mach at MyHeritage turns up, where Hans is assigned the parents Ole Thomsen and Birthe Hansdatter.
Such a pair did in fact have a son named Hans, but he was baptized already in 1754, 6-7 years too early... Some other source for your Hans's year of birth (other than the 1801 census) would have been good, such as his age by the time of death.
For what it is worth, here is the 1854 baptism: Top left |

Thank you for the work. The 1801 census raises a question. Here is the birth of Ole Hansen to this couple : https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061114010298 #6 on left.
No birth record for a Berthe in the next few years in this parish consistent with Ole 10 y/o and Berthe 8 y/o An earlier Birthe is here : https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061114010284 3rd on left but not consistent with a child younger than Ole. I will look for a death record as she would have been 12 in 1801 and reasonably been in the household. I don't discover one before 1797 more than long enough to have seen a second Birthe born in time to be 8 in 1801. Nothing through 1801 for a death of a dau of Hans Olsen. Must have been a pretty dramatic error !

Index card to probate records for one Hans Olsen, married to Siri Christensdatter, deceased 1813. Original and transcribed. According to the corresponding burial record, he was 59 years old at the time of death, that is, born around 1754. (#8 left.) |

But note that this birth/baptism is consistent with Birthe being 24 years old in the 1813/1814 probate records. Perhaps the age statistics for this family in the 1801 census are just not very good. |

Yes, thank you this also adds some uncertainty to Hans as the census and Grandma's records point to 1761 but I don't know what sources she had to go on in addition to parish registers but 1761 was long before her time. Hans would have been 46 at census not 40. I don't know what the source records from 1801 looked like - possible a 6 with a sweeping stroke could have looked like a 0 when transcribed from the I presume handwritten 1801 census information ? I can imagine that - not so easy to imagine 12 looking like 8 for Berthe ! If that's not enough, Thomas was 16 and Marthe 14 at census - odd they were not in home ? Not to mention that Marthe was older than both Ole and Berthe !
What do you think about this for the correct Hans Olsen : https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061114010021 top left Lots of tie ins - first child named Thomas, first girl Marthe which is Siri's mother's name, next girl Berthe - Hans' mothers name if I'm reading that right as the person who recorded seemed to put things on the page differently than standard.

Yes, all in all, that 1754 baptism is the most likely one in my view. The authors of this record at familysearch have apparently thought the same. |
