I am writing to inquire about finding the ship that my Grandfather,Ole Helgeson, came to America on. He was from Valdres, Norway, and came to America in 1881. Could you give me any ideas where I could look or do you have a database for that information? Thanks. Betty Jean Ellingson

I found one Ole Helgesen emigrating 1881, but couldn't say if he's the one:

Thank you for your reply. My grandfather was 23 years old when he came. I guess I should have mentioned that....His name in Norway was Ole Alvstad Helgesen (son)in America or could have been Ole Helgesen Alvstad (that's what my genealogist friend says it would be.) I have gone into the digitalarkivet before but unable to find anything without the specific month. I found my grandmother on it but I knew the month and year. If you could check again with this information, that would be appreciated.

Thanks Carla! You found them!! Yes, I had the year wrong. And he came with his brother and sister. This is so awesome!!!! Thanks so much. I thought he had only one sibling in America (Marit)--I will have to check out the story on Aagot. You have made my New Years! Thanks again. Betty Jean Ellingson

The agent this family used was F. E. Blichfeldt in Oslo/Christiania. He was agent for American Line in 1880 with arrivals in Philadelphia from Liverpool, England

The Wilson Line steamship S/S Angelo and S/S Pacific left Oslo/Christiania on May 28, 1880 bound for Hull, England, where the ships arrived about May 31.

The American Line steamship Ohio at Liverpool Port corresponded with the two departures from Christiania http://www.norwayheritage.com/t_corresp.asp?id=1018 . S/S Ohio arrived in Philadelphia June 11 or 12, 1880. The passenger list could be dated 1- 2 days after arrival.

Hi Betty, You are welcome. I'm glad they were the correct ones. By the way Aagot is Ole's sister, I know I thought it was a man's name too when I first saw it.
Good Luck on your search.
