The general practice here is to try to settle controversies by examining the multiple candidates there are and posting information about them.

You donot need fluency in Norwegian to understand the records. It is most helpful to know some basic vocabulary and their abbreviations and to be able to read handwriting.

Well Christa, if it makes you feel any better I understand Norwegian and I am no closer to knowing who are the parents of Erik Olsen than you are. Several problems contribute to that, One is the name. Erik Olsen as you can imagine is a rather common name. Two the three birth years we have found range from about 1790 to 1802, which gives rise to a very large number of candidates. Even trying to narrow it down by assuming that the birth year given in the marriage record is most accurate and that the mothers name is Sigri because the first daughter is called Sigri gives at least two candidates and so did not help much. The other approach we try is to use the farm names to connect the candidate parents to Erik Olsen. But I have not found any farm name for any of the candidates that is used by Erik Olsen in any of the parish records I have looked at for potential ancestors.

Tore has tried to use the farm records found in the Norwegian Bygdebøker to try and connect Erik Olsen to some ancestral farm without much luck. Although we have not yet ilooked at the Oppi farm to see if there is any connection there. Looking at Bygdebøker from America is a bit of a chore, which involves going to one of the few libraries that have a collection and looking through the volumes one can find.

Bottom line is that I feel we are a bit stuck at present with finding and posting various items of interest in hopes of a breakthrough.

Piece on Oppi in Sør-Odal bygdebok. (Misprint 1802 for the year of Sigrid's second wedding in 1820.)
