Gunder also says he is naturalized in the 1900 census. Declaration of Intention from the 1880s often contain the information of the US port they arrived in and approximately when.... |

All of you who searched for Trine, I very much appreciate your work. For those who are still with me in the hunt, I wonder if a search for Gunder might turn up something, since it is a fairly unusual name and has more letters that might be easier to decipher. The story is that they traveled together, which appears to be borne out by their contiguous listings in the police registry.
For those who were giving me tips on where to search, here are the sources I examined most thoroughly. Let me know if there are others:
1. Police registers on Digitalarkivet.no 2. Passenger manifests on Familysearch.org 3. Passenger manifests on Heritage.statueofliberty.org
I did some light searching of passenger manifests on Ancestry.com. I let my subscription lapse so I only get access when I go to the library.
Please tell me if there are other immigration databases I should search.
Thanks again for all your help! |

If that's the story for sure, that Trine and Gunder and Johanne travelled together over the ocean, Gunder's declaration of intention might give the you answer to the place where they landed in US and approximately when they arrived there. Gunder may be a relative farther back in time or he might not be but sometimes going sideways like that will give you the answer you want.
The eldest of Gunder's children was born in Iowa. |

Good set of eyes. I saw Gunder and Johane, both have ages of 30 so that is slightly off but close enough.
Here is what Ancestry.com called Gunder

Actually I was thinking Trine is the one about 8 lines above T Christens. My great-grandma Trine was an unmarried 25 year old when she made the crossing in 1882 so I thought that listing was a better match than T Christens who was a 30 year old married woman. Let me know if you think the entry 8 lines above could be read as "Trine." I thought so but maybe it's wishful thinking. It wouldn't be the first time. |

It's truly up to you to be satisfied but the upper looks to be Anne at first glance, labelled as a spin (short for spinster) is actually going to Milwaukee. It's much easier in America to be married when travelling with a kid. And where is Olaus or Claus?
You could go back and look up other names on the Norwegian police list that Trine is on and see if there are additional names in the Buenos Aryean. |
