As Anton notes above, we have found no connection between the Elsa Thorsen above, and Gunnar Knudsen. But given that (according to the failrly complete Digitalarkivet database) this Elsa was just one of two girls in Norway named Else/Elsa and born on 28/10-21, and that so much of the other information matches, including losing both parents as a child, coming from a shipping family, having last name Thorsen, etc, I think there should be little doubt about the identity.

In addition, there is also a matter of geographical vicinity. Gunnar Knudsen was born in Arendal, but (according to this article) his father founded -- and Gunnar expanded -- a shipyard at Frednes in present-day Porsgrunn in 1855, which he transferred to his sons in 1872. Hans Martin Thorsen was baptised at Eidanger church in present-day Porsgrund, while the family lived at Herøya (Herøen), also in present-day Porsgrunn, and next to Frednes. According to this document, Hans Martin's father founded a shipyard a little further south, at Gamle Langesund, in 1876.

ToreL - I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart - you have answered my prayers. I cannot thank you enough. The family lore has it that Gunnar Knudsen was her Grandfather but I cannot link him to her parents....any ideas? Thank you again Jean

I found bothing about brother Hans, beyond the information that two children from their marriage were orphaned after the parents' demise. There is a 100-year privacy clause on relevant documents, so more information may be available in a few years. In particular, the probate documents after the mother's death may become available electronically in 4-5 years. If this is close family of yours, you may apply for access sooner.

Regarding Gunnar Knudsen, my guess is there might have been close personal ties between the families, perhaps misrepresented as family ties in family lore. Perhaps a search for menbers of one family appearing as sponsors at baptisms in the other family might yield results. I didn't see anything of the kind, but didn't give it that hard a try.

I found that Hans Thorsen - Else's grandfather was married to Anna Maria Knudsen - this could be the link but sadly I am unable to find anything to connect her to Gunnar. I thought she may have been a sister or a cousin but it is hard for me to follow your records. Anna Maia was born 1846. Many thanks for your help so far.
