Hi,
I'm seeking information about Torger Jonsen b. 1824 in Krødsherad Norway who sailed ( emigrated) on the Ship Embla out from Christiania May 9 1849 and arrived in New York July 6 1849.
I guess that there is some kind of emigration registration paper on him located in NYC where he arrived, but do not know where to look.
Is there any WEB databases for NYC emigrations in 1849 available?
Any information on where he headed in US after arrival in New York and later family life is of interest.
rgs,
Roar

I am not familiar with Torger, but I am related to the Blegeberg and Fjoslien families on this ship. Turi Fjoslien and her husband Peder and their children settled in Freeborn County, Minnesota (Manchester area). they were my great-great-great grandparents. Since there seem to be many people on this ship from the same farm areas, perhaps Torger was with them and also went to freeborn county
I notice that the Torger you are interested in was 23 in 1849; this one is approximately the right age. The info is from the 1880 census:
Torger JOHNSON Household Other Information: Birth Year <1827> Birthplace NOR Age 53 Occupation Laborer Marital Status M <Married> Race W <White> Head of Household Torger JOHNSON Relation Self Father's Birthplace NOR Mother's Birthplace NOR 14. Johnetta JOHNSON - 1880 United States Census / Wisconsin Wife Gender: Female Birth: <1837> NOR 15. Ole T. JOHNSON - 1880 United States Census / Wisconsin Son Gender: Male Birth: <1880> WI 16. Ingri T. JOHNSON - 1880 United States Census / Wisconsin Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1880> WI
Source Information: Census Place Eau Galle, St. Croix, Wisconsin Family History Library Film 1255445 NA Film Number T9-1445 Page Number 222A
I should say that there are lots of Torger Johnsons listed in the 1880 census, and ages are notably unreliable...
Good luck searching. if you look at the Freeborn Co. genealogical Society site, and post an inquiry there, the folks there have been very helpful to me.

Hi
Thanks for your reply and help. The Torger you list in your reply could be the one I am searching. I went back to the parish records from Krødsherad in Buskerud Norway and found out that he was born late in 1826 or early 1827,not in 1824 as I stated earlier ( that was from the county book ) so the age looks ok. I have also found one Torger in Perry Township Dane Co at the same age. Which one ( if any) it is,is hard to say, but now I have at least something to search on. I will try the genealogical society in Freedom Co, to see if they can help me further. Torger was my great- great- grandfather's brother. A younger brother, Ole , also emigrated a little later, in 1862. I do not know the ship name.
rgs,
Roar
