On June 19, 1858, at 6 o'clock in the afternoon; the S/S Bremen left the wharf at Bremerhaven on her maiden voyage to New York, carrying 100 tons of freight, 1 cabin and 93 steerage passengers. She arrived in New York on July 4, at 7 o'clock in the morning. It is interesting, for the sake of comparison with similar particulars of modern fast leviathans, to note some points in the description of this steamer. Her length over all was 334 feet and width 42 feet, and capacity about 850 tons of coal and 1000 tons of freight. The engines represented 700 indicated horse power. On both sides of the saloon, which was spacious and handsomely fitted, the partitions being decorated with panels containing views of the town Bremen, were the first cabin staterooms, arranged for from 2 to 4 passengers, and containing besides the berths, couches, washstands and various lockers. Even at that time not only the first but also the second class had its smoking room and an elegant ladies' room. There were also 2 bath rooms and a library. The first class had accommodation for 60, the second for 110, and the steerage for 401 passengers. On July 30 the S/S Bremen returned to the Weser, having made the passage from New York in 12¼ days.
